Questions & Answers
Havaneses are an incredibly intelligent, loyal, and loving breed of dog. They are highly trainable due to their intelligence and are often referred to as the clowns of the canine world because of their curious, happy-go-lucky attitude. While considered small dogs, they can be quite active and energetic, and require a daily walks, exercise, and playtime to keep them healthy and mentally stimulated. They are usually good with children, and typically don't bark or yap often, but can be known for being vocal when meeting new people and animals.
The Havanese breed has a thick, long, and silky-smooth single coat that can be wavy or curly. It usually has a gorgeous range of colours, from white and cream, to gold, silver, chocolate and even sable. The texture of the coat is usually wavy, but if it is left to its own devices it will curl up. It does shed very little, making this breed low-maintenance in the grooming department. Although the coat does need to be regularly brushed, and may require occasional professional grooming, it is easy to care for.
Havaneses can eat a variety of foods. They tend to enjoy a diet rich with proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats, such as those found in lean meats, fish, eggs, vegetables, and grains. Many owners also offer their Havaneses freshly cooked meals such as boiled chicken, brown rice, and vegetables. In addition, Havaneses should have access to an unlimited supply of fresh water, as well as vegetables, as treats.
Preparing your home for a new Havanese is an important step in welcoming your pup into the fold. Before your pup arrives, ensure that you've puppy-proofed your home. Keep hazardous items, like cleaning supplies and electrical cords, out of reach and surrounded by a protective boundary. Make sure the pup has ample room to explore but can’t exit the house, by blockading any risky areas. Stock up on supplies, such as leashes and chew toys, to give your pup outlets for their energy.
Havanese puppies vary in size, depending on their gender, genetics, and environmental factors. Generally, male Havanese puppies are slightly larger than female puppies, weighing between 7 and 13 pounds when fully grown. Height can range from 8.5 to 11.5 inches at the shoulder. It is important to note, a smaller puppy could grow to be larger than average, and likewise a larger puppy could remain only slightly larger than average as an adult. Therefore, it is difficult to give a definitive answer as to how big your Havanese puppy will become.

It is possible to train a Havanese, though not necessarily easy. Depending on the particular individual, it can take considerable patience and consistency as well as determination and an understanding of basic obedience training for optimal results. It is important to keep in mind that a Havanese is a toy breed, meaning that they often behave more like cats than dogs, which can make training more difficult. Having a steady routine and plenty of reinforcement will be the key to having a well-behaved pet. It is essential to be consistent and reward good behavior frequently with treats, verbal praise or both.
