Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a small, lovable companion dog that originated from thebBichon family in Cuba. They are highly trainable, known for their intelligence, and full of energy. With their long, luxurious coat, these playful dogs come in a variety of colors such as white, black, and tan. They are highly adaptable and have an abundance of personality. Havanese have an extremely friendly personality and get along with other animals and kids. They are excellent watchdogs that have a tendency to bark when someone or something unfamiliar is around.
The Havanese coat is generally quite long and silky, but with a woolly texture that can be slightly curly or straight in areas. While there is no particular standard for the length of their coat, the average Havanese has hair that falls to the floor, sometimes with a feathering of shorter fur around the face and legs. The color and texture of the coat can vary and some even have parti-colored jackets with white and tan accents.
Havaneses are generally a toy breed of dog, so their diet needs to be tailored to their smaller size. When it comes to food, Havaneses are usually fed high-quality dry dog food that is specially designed for their type and size. Dry kibble is common, as it's easy to digest and provides the necessary nutrients they need to stay healthy while minimizing their risk of dental issues. Additionally, you can feed your Havaneses treats like boiled chicken, eggs, carrots, fruits and vegetables, but not too many as to not overfeed them.
Preparing your home for a new Havanese is relatively simple. First, familiarize yourself with their behaviors and needs so that you can provide a safe and comfortable environment. Secondly, be sure to have a few toys and chew items ready so your pup can explore the new space happily. Thirdly, purchase a few different treats to positively reinforce desirable behaviors. Fourth, create an area where the Havanese pup can safely relieve themselves, like a dog run or a designated corner in the house that's regularly cleaned.
Havaneses come in two basic sizes: Standard and Miniature. Standard Havaneses can be up to 11 inches in height and can weigh 8-13 pounds. Miniature Havaneses measure under 10 inches in height and weigh 4-7 pounds. That being said, each dog still has a unique size, so some may be larger or smaller than the standard ranges. Generally speaking, the difference in size between the two sizes is not dramatic. The difference lies in their overall built, with the Miniature Havaneses being smaller and more compact.
The amount of time you should dedicate to walking your Havanese depends on their age, activity level and overall health. Generally speaking, an adult Havanese should be walked approximately 15 20 minutes two to three times a day. Younger Havanese should not be walked too intensely until they are older and have had the proper amount of vaccinations. As your Havanese develops more stamina and energy, you can gradually prolong their walks until they reach their optimal activity level.
Havaneses are an incredibly friendly and loving breed of dog that can make wonderful family companions. They are very loyal to their human families and especially their owners and tend to be quite good with children. Despite their small size, they can still have a lot of energy and be quite rambunctious, so it is important to train them from an early age in order to ensure good behavior as an adult. In addition, since this breed is highly social, it would be beneficial to let them interact with young children regularly to ensure that they are comfortable around them.
Havaneses are incredibly smart dogs. They have been known to pick up on commands and hand signals quickly, and can learn complex skills quickly with consistent training. In addition to their intelligence, Havaneses are known for their loyalty and affectionate nature, which could explain why they're so popular with families. As an extremely trainable breed, Havaneses excel in activities such as agility, tricks, scent work, and competitive obedience. They have the energy to keep up with an active family, but their calm side also makes them a favorite among those looking for a more relaxed companion.
