Questions & Answers
Havanese are an affectionate, intelligent small breed of dog, originally from Cuba and well-suited for life with families. They have a single-layered coat, usually in colors of white, cream, gold, or slate blue. They are usually very friendly with people and get along well with other animals. Havanese require moderate grooming and exercise, but minimal shedding and barking. They are often referred to as playful, clownish and are very responsive to training. With their buoyant, upbeat attitudes they tend to love to learn new tricks.
The coat of the Havanese is rather unique, as it is long, soft, and slightly wavy with a moderate amount of curl. This medium-length coat is silky in texture and can range from straight to wavy. It does not require a great deal of grooming due to its easy to maintain coat, but brushing a few times per week is recommended to keep the coat healthy and shiny. The coat comes in a variety of colors, from black and white to silver and slate.
Havaneses typically eat a diet similar to other small breeds. They are omnivores and eat a combination of wet and dry food. The most common types of wet food Havaneses eat are canned dog food, puppy food, and other cooked food. Dry food, such as kibble and kibbles, is an important source of protein and vitamins in Havaneses' diet. For additional nutrition, many owners will also give their dogs treats, such as cooked chicken, beef, turkey, and other proteins.
Before you bring your Havanese home, it's a good idea to do some preparation. Set up a comfortable and safe space for them to stay in at home this could include getting a crate, pet bedding, bowls for food and water, and toys. Research the breed to determine their special needs as well as ensure that you have the proper grooming supplies and veterinarian care lined up. Test out different foods and snacks to find out what your pup prefers.
It is difficult to predict how big a Havanese puppy will be, but adult dogs of this breed typically weigh 7-13 lbs and stand 8-11 inches tall at the shoulder. Every puppy will be unique and grow at their own pace, and diet and exercise can also influence a dog’s size and weight. Consult with a veterinarian to discuss your puppy’s individual needs as they grow and offer guidance on nutrition and exercise. Additionally, ask your veterinarian to perform regular check-ups to ensure your puppy is developing in a healthy manner.
Havaneses are an active breed and do best with a moderate amount of exercise. They are playful and enjoy playing outdoors and going for walks. Depending on their age and energy level, Havaneses should get at least a 30 minute daily walk, preferably divided into two or three 15 minute sessions. Some people also choose to engage their Havaneses in agility training or fitness activities, such as swimming and fetch. As Havaneses mature, the amount of exercise they need may decrease, but they still require daily activity.
Havaneses are known for being excellent family pets. These little companion dogs make great playmates for children and get along well with other pets in the household. They are easy to train, intelligent, cheerful, and loving. Their small size suits them well to apartment living and they don't require a lot of exercise. If owners are willing to work with them, they have an eagerness to learn and an intelligence that allows them to suss out their surroundings quickly. The Havaneses has a gentle and pleasant nature and loves to be around its human family.
Training your Havanese can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for both you and your furry friend. The first step is to establish yourself as the pack leader, as Havanese are typically eager to please their owners. Establishing a routine and praising your Havanese for good behavior will help to create a foundation that makes learning faster and easier. Teaching basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, come and down are a great way to start.
