Questions & Answers
A Labradoodle is a hybrid breed of dog developed by crossing a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. They are extremely social, affectionate and intelligent dogs that make fantastic family companions. Labradoodles generally require minimal grooming and can range in size and appearance, with some physically larger and more slender, often more similar in stature to their Labrador parent, while others can inherit a puffier and fluffier coat, closer to the look of their Poodle heritage. No two Labradoodles are exactly alike, and they come in many different coat colors.
Labradoodle puppies can come with a significant cost, ranging anywhere from $1,500 to upwards of $3,000 depending on the breeders, coat color and size, and pedigree of the puppy. While a Labradoodle pup may be expensive, it’s essential to invest in a reputable breeder in order to ensure the puppy comes from a healthy and sound lineage. Additionally, for ethical reasons, it’s important to ensure that responsible breeding practices and standards of welfare are upheld when acquiring a Labradoodle puppy.
A Labradoodle's eventual size depends on the size of their Poodle parent and inherited genetics. Standard Labradoodles reach about 50-65 pounds when fully grown, medium Labradoodles weigh 30-45 pounds, and miniature Labradoodles top out at 15-25 pounds. An adult Labradoodle's size can be anywhere within a certain range, depending on the specific cross-breed of your puppy. Serious Labradoodle breeders use standard Poodle studs with carefully considered genetics in order to get the desired height, weight, and conformation of the litter.
Labradoodles are very low-shedding and are less likely to trigger allergic reactions. They are not 100% hypoallergenic, but their Poodle heritage contributes to their unique curly, wavy, or fleece-like coats that drastically reduce dander and shedding compared to other breeds. Generally speaking, these are much better options than many other dog breeds when it comes to their impact on people with allergies.
Labradoodles are known to be cheerful and charming companions to any family. They are highly trainable, intelligent dogs and form very strong bonds with their owners. Unfortunately, as with any dog, Labradoodles must be given consistent training and guidance from an early age in order to be good canine citizens and live harmoniously with other pets and people. They love getting attention from their owners, and respond best when given reassurance and positive feedback. Generally, people naturally gravitate to them, so they make excellent family pets in a loving home environment.
Labradoodle dogs possess an energetic personality and require plenty of physical and mental stimulation, including a minimum of 1 hour of daily exercise. Long walks in different environments, playing interactive games, and participating in dog sports such as agility and fetch all make ideal exercise regimes. It is also essential to ensure they get consistent daily exercise as this can help to discourage destructive behaviors caused by boredom.
It is paramount to give your Labradoodle puppy a nutritious, high-quality dog food. Consider trying a diet combination of wet and dry food to provide variety and success in meeting their nutritional needs. Be sure to talk to your vet before offering any food preference as they are in the best position to advise you on the best food, nutritional balance, and optimal schedule for your puppy.
Training your Labradoodle puppy should begin as early as possible for best results. Positive reinforcement methods, such as offering treats and praise and playing with your pup safely, will help to keep them engaged in the lesson. It is important to be consistent and patient when training, as this will help make the process smoother. It will be beneficial to join a puppy training class, too, as this will help to ensure proper socialization and to learn the necessary skills. In addition to the classes or external resources, speaking to an experienced dog trainer may also be highly beneficial.
