Questions & Answers
A Labradoodle is a designer dog hybrid that results from the careful crossbreeding of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. Labradoodles are highly intelligent, startlingly friendly, and mischieviously cute - making them ideal family pets! They come in various sizes, ranging from small to large, and coat colors, often varying from white, black and brown. Moreover, their minimal shedding coats make them ideal for people with allergies. Notoriously gentle and loyal, Labradoodles make great companion dogs that almost anyone can enjoy!
Labradoodle puppies can range in cost from around $1,500 up to $3,000, depending on the breeder and Labrador/Poodle lineage. The size, coat color, and demand are some of the other variables that can influence the price. Before buying a Labradoodle puppy, be sure to do your research Choose a reputable and responsible breeder, since they can guarantee the puppy’s health and well-being better than those with a lesser pedigree.
The size of your Labradoodle puppy will depend on the genetics it inherits from its parents, with most Labradoodles available in the classic three sizes: standard, medium and miniature. Standard Labradoodles usually weigh 50-65 pounds, medium Labradoodles from 30-45 pounds and mini Labradoodles range from 15-25 pounds. The size of your puppy will predominantly be determined by the size of its Poodle parent, although the genes it inherits from both parents could change its adult size slightly.
Despite what people might believe, Labradoodles are not 100% hypoallergenic. Even so, these low-shedding dogs are not considered high-shedding. They boast coats from the Poodle side of their ancestry, like fleece, curls, and waves, that have been specially bred to reduce the amount of dander and fur in the environment. This is why people who have a serious sensitivity to fur or dander may find Labradoodles easier on their allergies than some other dogs.
Labradoodles are known for having an excellent temperament, being friendly, outgoing and highly intelligent. They tend to be naturally affectionate and enjoy human companionship as well as that of other pets. While this makes them great family dogs, appropriate training is essential for encouraging continued responsible behavior when both alone and around others. Additionally, proper socialization from a young age is necessary for a Labradoodle to develop good manners and the confidence to thrive in the presence of unfamiliar people and animals.
Labradoodles are energetic, intelligent dogs that need regular physical and mental activity to stay healthy and behaviorally balanced. All Labradoodles benefit from at least one hour of daily exercise, such as engaging walks, interactive games, or activities like agility or disc-catching. It goes without saying that the more exercise Labradoodles get, the better, as it’s also important in draining some of their high energy and thus can prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. Keeping them active also helps promote mental alertness and proper socialization.
Offering your Labradoodle a healthy balance of diet is imperative to their general wellbeing and maturation. There are a number of options that fit this need, including dry dog kibble, wet food, or a range of both. Depending on the size, breed, and activity level of your pup, the right nutrition and feeding schedule can greatly vary. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Accordingly, it is highly recommended that you consult your veterinarian and determine the best food items to feed your pup and the appropriate feeding schedule.
Training your Labradoodle puppy should be a priority. As with training any canine, patience and consistency is key. Ensuring that your pup is well socialized is an important factor to consider, and training classes give an excellent foundation of proper doggy behavior in a social environment, as well as teaching your Labradoodle basic commands. Additionally, supplementing classroom teaching with at home ‘homework’ can really help reinforce learning. Give your pup commands in the form of daily tasks that utilize the language and principles – reward system – taught in the classes.
