Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are mixed breed dogs that come from two beloved family favorite breeds, the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. The combination of these two breeds can result in friendly, sociable dogs that are highly intelligent and characteristically low-shedding. Not only are Labradoodles wonderful companion animals, they can come in a diverse range of beautiful colors and sizes due to the various colors and sizes of their Poodle parent.
The cost of a Labradoodle puppy can be as variable as puppies themselves; a good Labradoodle puppy usually costs approximately $1,500 to $3,000. However, factors such as the reputation of the breeder, the pup's lineage, the size and coat color you’re looking for and the overall demand for those characteristics can drive the cost either higher or lower. The actual cost depends on each person's particular circumstances.
The size of your Labradoodle puppy will depend on a combination of their Poodle parent's size and their inherited genetics. Generally, Labradoodles come in three main sizes - standard, medium, and miniature. Standard Labradoodles typically weigh 50-65 pounds; medium Labradoodles weigh around 30-45 pounds and miniature Labradoodles weigh 15-25 pounds. Keep in mind that definitive measurements of size are not necessarily as important as your doodle’s physical fitness, depending on your desired purpose for the pup.
While it is ultimately impossible to tell whether or not an individual will be allergic to a Labradoodle or any dog breed, Labradoodles are considered to be a low-shedding breed, making them less likely to trigger an allergic response. This breed has a special coat that combats dander and shedding. It typically has tight curls, waves, or a soft fleece-like feeling, which experts suggest make the breed more allergy-friendly. Labradoodles usually require more grooming than most other breeds in order to maintain their distinctive coat.
Labradoodles are known for their outgoing and affectionate personality. They have a natural intelligence and eagerness to please, and make excellent companions. Due to their adaptable nature, Labradoodles thrive in any environment – from city apartments to outdoor adventures – making them one of the most versatile and beloved family dogs. But like all dogs, early and ongoing socialization, including training and activities, are important for developing their temperament and good behavior.
Labradoodles have an exuberant and inquisitive spirit and so should be provided with both physical and mental stimulation each day. It is best that they have at least 1 hour of exercise each day either through a walk, play, or agility training. This direct engagement is key to preventing unwanted behaviors due to boredom. Keeping the Labradoodle physically and mentally active supplies many benefits for them including maintaining a healthy weight and muscle tone, relieving boredom, and providing them with an outlet torelease excess energy.
If your Labradoodle puppy is not on a weaning program yet, then their diet should include high quality puppy food specifically formulated to meet the nutritional needs of puppies. Dry puppy kibble is a good option as they contain all the essential nutrients that your puppy needs during their growing stages, as well as being easier to store and more convenient to prepare. It is important to understand the nutritional requirements of your puppy, and this can be discussed with your vet.
Training your Labradoodle puppy should start as soon as possible. The best approach is to use positive reinforcement to reward desirable behavior. Treats, verbal praise, and a session of play are great tools for reinforcing good actions. Additionally, staying consistent and exhibiting patience are paramount for successful training. Registering your pup in puppy training classes is highly recommended to assist with socialization and learning basic commands. For extra help, there are many helpful books and reliable online resources you can use to guide you through the process.
