Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are considered one of the most popular canine breeds worldwide due to their loyal, friendly, and energetic nature. They have a strong, muscular build, and love long and vigorous walks or activities. As the name implies, these dogs are excellent swimmers and adore being in the water. Because of their intelligence, Labradors are extremely trainable, and have served as service, guide, and therapy dogs. When properly socialized they can do very well in large and small family households, making great companions for children.
Labradors Retriever have a short, waterproof, double-coat. The outer coat is short and dense-lying with a firm texture and is either flat or slightly wavy. The inner coat serves to insulate and protect the other layers and is composed of soft, mufti-layer hairs. The coat comes in three colors: black, yellow, and chocolate. All three colors can be either solid or have a white blaze on their chest, tip of the tail, chin, and sometimes on their forehead, feet and legs.
Labrador Retrievers do have some special dietary needs. They are large breeds of dogs that need a well-balanced diet that is rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals. It's very important that Labrador Retrievers get enough quality calories each day, as obesity can cause a number of health issues. Some Labs may also require a diet that is lower in fat and includes more fiber to help with digestion. Avoid feeding them foods like onions, chocolate, avocados and raw fish as those can be potentially toxic. Small, frequent meals are best so the food can be digested properly.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Labrador Retriever begins with researching the breed and their needs in advance. Make sure your home is puppy-proofed and that you have the necessary supplies food, toys, bed, bowls, etc. for your pup. Once you've made the transition to bringing them home, set up a schedule for feeding, playing, exercising, and training. Set up a potty and/or crate training routine and stick to it.
Labrador Retrievers come in three sizes – Standard, Medium, and Miniature. Standard Labradors are the original size, and can range from 56 to 71 centimeters (22 to 27 inches) in height and weigh between 27 to 40 kilograms (60 to 88 pounds). Medium Labradors have a smaller frame with a height of between 46 and 56 centimeters (18 to 22 inches) and weigh between 20 to 27 kilograms (44 to 58 pounds).
It is generally recommended that Labrador Retrievers get at least 30 minutes of brisk exercise every day. Depending on their particular exercise needs and health, the amount of time can vary, but 45-60 minutes is ideal. If you are limited on time, you can break the activity up into shorter periods of physical activity such as two 15 or 20 minute walks or one 30 minute walk. Mental stimulation is also important and can be accomplished through activities such as playtime with toys, dog sports, or interactive games. This can improve your lab’s natural behaviors and reinforce positive relationships.
Labrador Retrievers are known for being sweet, gentle, affectionate, and loving companions, so it should come as no surprise that they are known for being excellent with children. Labradors are incredibly sociable and outgoing, making them perfect for households with kids. They are patient, tolerant, and typically enjoy playing games, which children especially tend to appreciate. Labradors also have relatively low exercise requirements and tend to do better when they have consistent playtime with their family members.
Training your Labrador Retriever requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Begin by establishing basic commands like sit, stay, and come. Teaching your pup to sit is one of the easiest commands to master as you can use treats as positive reinforcement. Gradually increase the difficulty as your pup masters the command by increasing the distance they must still while sitting. Move to other commands like stay, and come. Again, remember to reward with treats as positive reinforcement. Involve everyone in the family to ensure that the same commands, with the same tones of voice, are used.
