Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are not only one of the most popular breeds in the United States but have a fascinating history. They have a distinct background derived from the St. John’s water dog, a common Newfoundland fishing companion. Because of their striking coats, Labradors are often used for gun dog training and hunting. In addition, their loyal and friendly personalities make them great family pets. Interestingly, the chocolate brown color of the Labrador did not appear until the 19th century when a chocolate-colored pup was born in a litter.
The Labrador Retriever's coat is known for its beautiful texture and wonderful luster. It is typically short and thick with a hard, waterproof outer coat and soft, dense undercoat. The coats of Labrador Retrievers come in three standard colors – black, yellow and chocolate. Labradors also come in rarer coat colors such as silver, red, and even 'phantom!' All Labradors have natural protection from the cold weather due to their double coat of fur, which helps keep their skin dry and warm during outdoor activities in cold climates.
Labrador Retrievers typically eat a diet that is high in protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Depending on their age and type of activity, they may need more fat and protein than others. It's best to speak to your veterinarian to determine your dog's particular caloric needs. For best results, it's important to feed only premium-quality dry dog food that provides essential vitamins and minerals to help keep your dog healthy. Treats can also be a part of your Labradors diet, but should only be given in moderation and not as a substitute for actual meals.
Before bringing a Labrador Retriever into your home, there are a few preparations to be made. First and foremost, it is important to puppy-proof your home. Conceal any electrical cords and wires and store household cleaners and other hazardous items out of reach. It may also be wise to set up a designated bathroom spot for your Labrador, such as a patch of grass or artificial turf. This should include potty pads and a container for their waste. You will also need to purchase food, toys, crates and chewables that your puppy can use to amuse itself.
The size of your Labrador Retriever puppy will depend on its parentage and genetics, as well as its diet and overall health. Generally, adult male Labradors are between 22-24 inches tall and weigh anywhere from 65-80 lbs. Adult female Labradors are usually slightly smaller, standing at around 21-23 inches tall and weighing between 55-70 lbs. Thus, your Lab puppy can potentially reach these heights, but the exact size will depend on its health, nutrition, and other environmental factors. On average, Lab puppies increase their height and weight between 0.
Labrador Retrievers are an active breed and require consistent, daily exercise. Depending on their age and activity level, adult Labradors should get at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity a day and puppies should get shorter bouts of exercise multiple times a day to ensure their growth and development aren't stunted. To stay healthy, Labradors should undergo activities such as swimming and running, as well as short active walks. Playing with interactive and dynamic toys can help Labradors get the physical and mental stimulation they need as well.
Labrador Retrievers are well-known for being an incredibly family-friendly breed, and they are especially revered for their great patience and loving nature with children. Labs are friendly, energetic, and have an uncanny ability to sense when someone needs extra love and affection. Labrador Retrievers have an innate desire to bond with their families and typically make wonderful playmates for children. They are willing to please and respond well to consistent training and encouragement. With their intelligence, loyalty, and devotion to their families, Labrador Retrievers can make very special companions for children of all ages.
Training a Labrador Retriever is not necessarily easy, but it is quite doable with a little consistency and patience. The key to successful training is to establish trust and communication in a positive and encouraging way. When done correctly, this breed is known for its active and eager-to-please attitude, which makes training easier. Labrador Retrievers also thrive off of positive reinforcement, so providing appropriate rewards and praise will help motivate them and keep them on the right track.
