Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are an extremely popular breed of dog renowned for their sweet nature, intelligence and playfulness. They make excellent family pets, as they are eager to please their owners and are good with children. Labs require a lot of activity, and do best with an owner who can give them plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Labs are also sensitive to extreme weather, so it is important to ensure proper shelter and warmth during both hot and cold weather. It is also important to keep up with their grooming needs.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered hypoallergenic. While Labradors are a breed that has been known to produce less of the proteins typically responsible for triggering allergic reactions in some people, the breed itself is not generally considered hypoallergenic. Some Labradors may produce less of the proteins responsible for allergies, though the amount and type of proteins produced can vary greatly from dog to dog, so there are no guarantees when it comes to a Labrador Retriever producing fewer proteins that would make it hypoallergenic.
Labrador Retrievers typically have an omnivorous diet and may require a bit more protein than other breeds. Due to their high activity level, Labs need a nutritionally balanced meal plan with plenty of healthy sources of protein and carbohydrates. Managing a Lab's diet is important for their overall health, as they are more prone to obesity than other breeds. A veterinarian is the most qualified professional to recommend the appropriate diet for a Lab.
Preparing for a new Labrador Retriever requires both physical and emotional preparation. Start by ensuring your home is safe for your puppy by case-proofing and making necessary changes. Get all necessary supplies, such as a crate and bed, food & water dishes, leash, collar & tags, grooming supplies, toys and treats. Plan your puppy's diet, deciding when, what and how much you will feed your puppy. Learn about the breed's characteristics and trainability and browse books, websites and magazines for helpful advice and information.
Labrador Retrievers come in three different sizes. The Standard Labrador Retriever is usually between 21.5-24.5 inches tall and weighs between 55-80 pounds. The Medium Labrador Retriever is slightly smaller and typically stands between 17.5-21.5 inches and weighs between 40-55 pounds. The Miniature Labrador Retriever is the smallest version, usually measuring between 14.5-17.5 inches and weighing between 30-45 pounds. All three varieties of Labrador Retrievers have the same friendly personalities and make terrific family dogs.
Labrador Retrievers are among the most popular dog breeds around and they require a significant amount of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Generally, daily walks of around 30 minutes are recommended, along with several other sessions of activity throughout the day. 12 hours of physical and mental stimulation per week is ideal for Labradors and the best way to achieve this is with a combination of exercise and activity such as playing fetch, hide and seek, and tug-of-war.
Labrador Retrievers are widely known for their poise, amicability and intelligence, making them incredibly well-suited for families of all sizes. This breed is known to be incredibly loyal and make wonderful feathered family members, as they love to join in on all of the activities without wanting to be the center of attention. A Labrador Retriever will protect its family and show unwavering loyalty towards its people. They adapt well to changes in the environment, as well as being great with children and other pets.
Training your Labrador Retriever should begin as soon as possible. Start by rewarding desired behaviors with treats like verbal commendation or a reward toy or game. Make sure your puppy is comfortable and free from distractions like other animals or loud noises. Next, start with basic commands like "sit" and "stay." Remember to give your dog enough time to respond and use the same verbal command and hand signal. As your puppy learns, add more commands and gradually increase the challenge. Focus on practicing one command to a mastery level before moving on to the next.
