Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most beloved and well-known breeds in the world! They originated in Newfoundland, Canada and were mainly used as a working dog. Fun facts about Labradors include that they are the most popular breed in the United States and span a range of colors from black to yellow and chocolate. Their coats are made to be water-resistant, making them the ideal breed for swimming and playing in the water. Labs are also extremely intelligent and can learn commands quickly, making them an ideal breed for service dogs.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered hypoallergenic. While it is true that some people with allergies are less likely to react to this breed of dog, Labradors do shed frequently and require regular brushing, which can produce allergens which some may be sensitive to. For people with severe allergies, a hypoallergenic breed of dog may be a better option; a good choice for those who still want a larger breed is a Portuguese Water Dog.
Labrador Retrievers do have special dietary needs, though they are not necessarily any more complicated than other breeds. In general, a high-quality, species-appropriate diet is recommended for any dog, but Labradors have an increased risk for obesity due to their propensity for scavenging for snacks. Generally, Vet's will recommend a diet that is slightly lower in fat and higher in fiber to help keep the Labrador from gaining too much weight. Specifically tailored omega-3 fatty acids are also commonly recommended to help maintain healthy joints and skin, as well as reduce inflammation.
The best way to prepare your home for your new Labrador Retriever is to create a comfortable, safe, and secure living environment. Start by puppy-proofing your home to make sure that your puppy cannot reach objects that are potentially dangerous. Set up a designated play or sleeping area for your puppy with toys, bedding, and food and water bowls. Make sure to get all necessary vaccinations and don't forget to equip your Labrador Retriever with a collar and identification tags.
Labrador Retrievers typically grow to medium-sized adult heights, generally standing 21.5 24.5 inches (54.5 62 cm) at the shoulder. Their average weight range varies from 55 80 pounds (25 36 kg). However, short-legged 'Stubby' Labradors can reach a height of around 19 inches (48 cm) at the shoulder and can weigh less than 55 pounds (25 kg). Labrador Retrievers have a rounded head, broad chest and a thick water-resistant coat.
Labrador Retrievers are an active breed and need plenty of exercise; as a guideline, it's recommended that you give them 30–60 minutes of exercise per day. This should include a combination of walks, playing fetch, and other interactive activities. When taking walks, you can increase the amount of time slowly to ensure that your Labrador Retriever doesn't tire easily; the duration will depend on their age and current fitness level. Remember to also keep their mental stimulation in mind and challenge them with puzzle toys or other games.
Labrador Retrievers are widely known to be a friendly and faithful breed, making them an ideal choice for households with children. They are known to be very loyal and energetic, and though they may be clumsy at times, it is nothing that a good amount of training and reinforcement couldn't fix. They are often very eager to please, and their intelligence makes them easy to train. Labradors also possess a great deal of patience, meaning they can put up with a lot from a child before losing their cool.
Training a Labrador Retriever is an important step in developing their obedience and good behavior. To get started, it's best to employ positive reinforcement methods such as offering treats or praise for correct behaviors. Additionally, establishing a routine helps dogs learn, so it's important to practice specific behaviors on a consistent basis. When providing commands, be clear and consistent and provide plenty of repetition to help your Labrador Retriever learn quickly. When working with your Labrador Retriever, be patient and understanding; praise them for good behaviors and don't be afraid to take a break if your dog gets overwhelmed.
