Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are the world's most popular breed of dog, and for good reason! They are gentle, loyal, and love children. Fun facts about Labradors include that they are the best swimmers among any breed, have a double coat, and have webbed feet that help them to be excellent swimmers. The Labrador Retriever was first recognized as a breed in 1903, and they were bred to assist fishermen by retrieving fish that had been trapped by the fishermen's nets. Labs also have their own language they bark to communicate different emotions and engage in play.
Labrador Retrievers are not hypoallergenic. This breed of dog has a thick, water-resistant double coat that sheds year round. As a result of shedding, it is likely that pet dander, which is an allergen, will be present in the home. For people who are sensitive to pet allergens, a Labrador Retriever may not be the best choice of pet. While there are a few low-shedding breeds that may cause fewer allergic reactions, simply having a pet in the home may in itself present a risk.
Labrador Retrievers do have some special dietary needs that must be taken into consideration when deciding what to feed them. Generally, Labradors have large, active appetites that must be adequately met to keep them healthy and happy. They are particularly susceptible to digestive issues, so the food chosen for them should be high in protein and fat. It's important to choose a diet that is specifically designed for large breed dogs, which should contain plenty of antioxidants, omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, and other vitamins and minerals.
Preparing for a new Labrador Retriever can be a challenging but incredibly rewarding process. One of the first steps is to research the breed to learn more about their general behavior, temperament, and health needs. Secondly, create a safe and secure environment for your Labrador. Stock up on supplies such as robust bedding, food and water dishes, chew-resistant toys, and waste disposal bags. Consider puppy-proofing your home to prevent any accidents from happening. Ensure that you have an appropriate lead and collar to train your pup on how to walk outside.
Labrador Retrievers come in a variety of sizes, although they generally have a medium-large set of proportions. A mature Labrador Retriever stands between 21.5 to 24.5 inches tall at the shoulder, and will usually weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. Males tend to be on the larger side than females. There are also two recognized size varieties of Labrador Retrievers: Standard and Miniature, with the former being more common. Standard Labradors are the average size described above, while Miniature Labradors are between 17.5 to 20.
Labrador Retrievers are highly energetic dogs, requiring a daily amount of physical and mental stimulation for optimal health and wellbeing. They were originally bred to be working dogs and thus have a lot of energy and enthusiasm, with a strong desire to please. Labs need lots of exercise--a brisk walk, jog, or swim twice a day is recommended--along with plenty of play leading to mental enrichment. They flourish in a variety of activities, from dog sports to family activities, and are great companions for anyone who likes to get outdoors and be active.
Labrador Retrievers are excellent family dogs that love children, and make great companions and protectors. They are patient, playful and loving, and their temperament makes them great choices for families with small children. They are also very intelligent, so they can be trained to play gently with small kids and understand boundaries. Labradors have also been known to form strong, affectionate bonds with their families, and can even help children to learn, since they are so eager to please.
Labrador Retrievers are incredibly intelligent dogs that possess an impressive set of skills. Their eagerness to please and natural desire to learn make them one of the most beloved family pets and a great choice for service jobs. Labrador Retrievers are known for their excellent problem-solving skills, which makes them especially adept at jobs requiring problem-solving abilities. They are also among the fastest learning breeds, picking up commands quickly, which allows them to excel in obedience and agility tests. Furthermore, their friendly and outgoing nature, combined with their innate intelligence, makes them an ideal pet for any family.
