Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dog in the United States, second only to the Golden Retriever! They were originally bred to help fishermen in Newfoundland, Canada, retrieve fish and other items from the cold waters Saint Lawrence Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. A prime example of the breed is the Official White House pet and first dog of former President Obama Bo, a Black Labrador. Intelligent and incredibly loyal, Labrador Retrievers can live up to ten or even twelve years. They love to play, fetch, and swim and make for great family pets.
While many people believe Labradors are non-shedding dogs, that is, in fact, not the case. Labradors do shed, though their coat does not require as much maintenance as other breeds. While the Labrador's coat is generally short and dense, it does shed to maintain cleanliness and remove dirt and bacteria. Unlike other breeds of dogs, the Labrador coat does not contain an undercoat which means that shedding is limited to the individual hairs rather than clumps of fur.
Labrador Retrievers do have some dietary needs that are different from other breeds of dogs. Generally, labs require a higher protein content in their food than other breeds, as well as larger meals throughout the day. They also need plenty of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to remain healthy. These particular needs should be taken into account when considering what type of food to provide for your Labrador Retriever. In addition, many veterinarians recommend providing 'all natural' foods rather than fillers and artificial ingredients, as these can have a detrimental effect on your Labrador's long-term health.
Becoming the best puppy parent while you prepare for your new Labrador Retriever pup starts with doing your research. Read books and articles on the Labrador Retriever breed, find out about necessary vaccinations, crate training and exploring suitable foods for your new puppy. Talk to your veterinarian and dog trainers to get good insight and advice on the newest member of your family. Prepare a dedicated puppy space in your home where your pup can focus on its activity and have a safe place to relax.
Labrador Retrievers come in many different sizes, ranging from a smaller "just right" size of about 15-20 inches tall and weighing 30-50 pounds, all the way up to a giant size of 26 inches or more and weighing up to 100 pounds or more. They typically come in three distinct sizes, traditionally classified as Standard, Miniature, and Giant, though individual breeders may slightly change these sizes.
The amount of time you should walk your Labrador Retriever depends on multiple factors such as age, activity level, and health. Generally, an adult Labrador Retriever should have at least 30 minutes of exercise per day with two to three 15 minute walks. If your Labrador Retriever is particularly active, you may want to consider longer walking sessions to satisfy their needs. Young puppies should only be given short, 30 minute walks multiple times a day. Lastly, it is important to check with your veterinarian and tailor the duration and frequency of walks to your specific Labrador Retriever's needs.
Labrador Retrievers are an excellent choice for families, especially families with children. Highly intelligent but also eager to please, these gentle-natured dogs have been cherished by families for decades and have been named the most popular dog breed in America by the AKC in 2017. They are very easy to train and are naturally gentle with children and other pets as well as strangers. Labradors are also fairly low maintenance and enjoy moderate exercise, making them a great fit for active families without having to sacrifice too much of your free time.
Labrador Retrievers are undoubtedly very intelligent. With their curious and playful nature, Labs often have an appetite for learning that makes them easy to train. Not only do they have great natural instincts and a willingness to please, but they are eager to learn, resulting in a breed that is highly adaptable and capable of learning any task quickly. They have a strong sense of loyalty to their family and make loyal companions that are ready and willing to please. In addition, Labrador Retrievers have great problem-solving skills, making them very adept at figuring out puzzles and developing strategies.
