Questions & Answers
A Labrador Retriever is a friendly and highly trainable breed of dog. They were initially bred as working dogs to help fishermen and later on as gun dogs to help hunters retrieve game such as ducks and birds. Labradors are incredibly smart, making them ideal for people who want an intelligent, loyal companion. Their short, thick coat and muscular body make them adept for retrieving, swimming, and other outdoor activities. Often known for their gentle nature, Labradors make great family dogs. They have a tendency to be easily excited which can lead to unwanted behaviors if not managed correctly.
Labrador Retrievers are considered to be a medium shedder – meaning they will have some shedding that is usually seasonal or when their coat is changing. That said, Labradors generally don't shed as much as some other breeds of dog. Occasionally, Labradors will drop shorter haired fur from their undercoat, but its usually not enough to be considered a true "non-shedding" breed. The way to keep shedding manageable is to brush them regularly and make sure they are healthy – so that their coat is as healthy and thick as possible.
Labrador Retrievers are usually fed a high-quality diet that is either commercially produced or home-prepared tailored to the specific pup's needs. This includes quality meat and fish, eggs, dairy, fruits, basic vegetable matter and carbohydrates like potatoes. Most of what Labradors eat comes from the carbohydrates, allowing for good energy for running and playing. It is advised to feed them small meals two to three times throughout the day, with some good treats that can be given for training and for positive reinforcement.
Preparing for your new Labrador Retriever requires some forethought. Start by researching Labrador Retriever-specific needs such as food, grooming, vaccines, and day care. Buy all the necessary items prior to the arrival of your new pup, like a collar, leash and water and food bowls. Ensure that your home and backyard are safe for your pet for example by removing any dangerous hazards such as toxic plants and chemicals, and ensuring all fences are secure. Make a list of potty-training commands that can help your pup understand what’s expected of him.
Labrador Retrievers are medium-sized dogs that typically reach their full adult size between 1-2 years old. Depending on their general health and nutrition, a Labrador Retriever puppy can grow to be as small as 18 inches in height and can weigh between 55 to 80 pounds. However, males tend to be larger than females and generally do not exceed 24 inches in height and can weigh between 65 to 95 pounds. In other words, your Labrador Retriever puppy size can vary widely, but the adult size will provide you with a better idea of the dog's final size.
How much you should walk your Labrador Retriever varies a lot depending on their age, health, and activity level, but a good recommendation as a general guideline is 30-60 minutes per day of exercise including walking, running, fetching, and playing. Puppies and young adult dogs that are full of energy need more physical activity than older Labradors who have arthritis or joint issues, but all Labradors should get some daily physical activity. Before beginning a walking routine, be sure to check with your vet to ensure that your Labrador is physically fit and healthy enough to handle the exercise.

They are especially great with children, as they have a lot of patience and won't be intimidated. Labradors have an eagerness to please and learn, so they can be trained and taught just about anything. Plus, they're intelligent enough to know when their family might need some extra love and protection, making them an amazing companion and protector for all kinds of families.
