Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are incredibly intelligent working dogs! They are the most popular breed in the United States and the United Kingdom, and are regularly used as service, therapy, and guide dogs. They are highly trainable, patient, and good-natured, and often make wonderful family pets. Labradors are also amazing athletes and during the summer when the water is warm, they love to swim! They have a double coat and an oily layer that helps repel water, making them excellent swimmers.
The Labrador Retriever has a distinctive, shiny, water-resistant double coat, consisting of a dense inner layer and a thick outer layer. The outer layer is coarser, longer and usually darker than the inner layer. Compared to other breeds, the Labrador Retriever has an unusual amount of feathering on the hind legs, tail and underbelly. The thick coat keeps the dog insulated and dry in wet weather and conditions, while in hot weather they may appear less impressive with their longer coats lying flat.
Labrador Retrievers may require a higher amount of calories and fat when compared to the average dog, making it important to feed them a diet formulated for working or sporting dogs. These diets often have higher calories and more fat than a regular adult diet, along with increased levels of certain nutrients, such as calcium and Vitamin D, for optimal growth and joint health. With proper nutrition, Labs can develop strong muscles, a glossy coat, and have plenty of energy for playing and exercising.
Preparing your home for a new Labrador Retriever might seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be! Make sure the house is clear of any hazardous objects or materials that your pup might get into. Start setting up a designated area for your pup that is comfortable, safe and away from distractions. Make sure the area is puppy proofed with chew toys, beds, a crate if you plan to crate train, and a water bowl.
Size can vary widely for Labrador Retrievers as puppies and when they reach adulthood. Generally, a Labrador Retriever puppy will weigh around 5-11 lbs when they are eight weeks old, depending on their gender and the size of their parents. By the time the puppy reaches seven months of age, they should reach around 50 lbs. Size can also depend on the nutrition they receive and whether they are neutered or spayed, as those procedures affect their growth hormones. It's important to remember that Labrador Retrievers are energetic and may require lots of exercise as they reach adulthood.
Labrador Retrievers are an active breed, and an important part of their overall health and wellbeing is exercise. Generally, Labradors need between 30-60 minutes of moderate exercise daily. A Labrador could benefit from at least two longer walks per day, in addition to playtime, and a couple of interactive games like fetch. This can be especially helpful if your Labrador is showing signs of boredom or destructive behavior. It's also important to add in some variation in exercise intensity each week, as Labradors can become easily bored with the same routine.
Labrador Retrievers make excellent family dogs. Highly intelligent, eager-to-please, and loyal, Labs are typically great companion animals that can easily become an integral part of your family. Whether they are playing at the park, fetching the ball, or simply snuggling with you, they display amazing affection and companionship that often lasts a lifetime. These dogs are gentle with children, making them perfect as a playmate. They are also very easy to train and typically have no problem following commands.
Yes, Labrador Retrievers are exceptionally smart. They are ranked as the 7th most intelligent dog breed according to an extensive 138 exercises and trials conducted by the Border Collie. Known to be the most friendly and obedient type of retrievers, Labradors are a sought after dog breed because of their intelligence. During their development, Labradors are provided with plenty of mental stimulation and challenging activities to help them be more alert and responsive. They have amazing problem solving, agility and instinctive knowledge. This makes them capable of learning commands quickly and efficiently.
