Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most beloved breeds of dog the world over. These smart and loyal pooches were originally bred in Newfoundland, then brought over to England, and later developed into the breed we know and love today. Fun fact: Labradors are considered to be the world's top assistance dogs and are often used for roles such as service dogs, guide dogs, and therapy dogs. They also use their noses for different jobs such as disaster rescue, narcotic detection, and cadaver search.
Labrador Retrievers are not hypoallergenic and can trigger allergic reactions in people with sensitivities to dog dander and/or pet saliva. Those with allergies may experience coughing and sneezing, nasal congestion, watery eyes, runny nose, and/or itching. Although Labs are not hypoallergenic, there are steps one can take to lessen the presence of allergens.
Labrador Retrievers need a balanced nutrition to maintain their health and wellbeing. An ideal diet for them should contain meats, grains, and vegetables. Protein should account for 30% of the diet, and fats should be around 10%. High-quality proteins like chicken, fish, beef, and lamb should be the main source. This should be supplemented with complex carbohydrates like oats, brown rice, and barley, as well as moderate amounts of healthy fats like egg yolk and cheese. Vegetables are also important and should be included in the form of greens, like broccoli, spinach, and kale.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Labrador Retriever starts with being prepared for their arrival. Research their breed and what kind of environment and diet they need. Make sure your home is safe by puppy proofing and you have a space set up for them to eat and sleep. Spend time reinforcing positive behavior with verbal praise, treats, and consistent playtime. Ensure they have plenty of exercise and stimulation to help minimize any destructive or mischievous behavior. Being a responsible pack leader will help develop your pup into a well-mannered and balanced dog.
Labrador Retrievers come in three size varieties: the Standard, the Miniature, and the Toy. Standard Labradors are medium to large-sized dogs, weighing between 55 and 80 pounds, standing anywhere from 21.5 to 24.5 inches tall at the withers. Miniature Labradors are much smaller, weighing only around 15 to 20 pounds, with heights ranging between 14 to 17 inches. Finally, Toy Labradors are the smallest of the three, weighing approximately 5 to 8 pounds and standing no taller than 12 inches at the withers.
