A Labrador Retriever, commonly known as a Lab, is an incredibly popular breed of dog originating from Newfoundland in the 19th century. Bred primarily to work beside fisherman and oil rig staffers, a Labrador Retriever is an energetic, outgoing, and friendly breed. Their enthusiasm, wellbeing, and obedience make them an ideal family pet. Labs are known for their intelligence, willingness to please, and their love of exploration, actively participating in anything their owners are doing. They possess strong outwards and webbed paws making them an excellent pick for swimming and other activities.
Although not completely non-shedding, Labrador Retrievers are generally low-shedding. With regular coat maintenance, such as brushing weekly or bi-weekly, the amount of shedding can be reduced. Labrador Retrievers usually come in three standard sizes: the Standard, the Small, and the Miniature. Standard Labradors weigh anywhere from 55 to 80 pounds, and usually stand up to 24.5 inches tall. Small Labradors are smaller and lighter than their Standard counterparts, weighing in at somewhere between 33 and 55 pounds, and standing up to 18 21.5 inches tall. Labrador Retrievers need a daily dose of vigorous exercise to stay fit and healthy. This could include playing outdoors, going on long walks, and engaging in active sports or activities like swimming or agility training. It's important to remember that Labradors thrive on regular physical and mental stimulation. An ideal daily exercise program for a Labrador should include at least 30 to 60 minutes of vigorous activity, however, owners should consult their veterinarian for specific Breed-appropriate exercise routines and set exercise goals that are appropriate for their individual Lab's age, size and energy level.
Labrador Retrievers are exceptionally well-suited for family life with children. Not only do they make wonderful, patient family companions, they are also gentle, intelligent, and tend to form very strong bonds with the people in their lives. They are extremely sociable and get along with both children and adults alike. Labs are quite tolerant and even-tempered, and tend not to be easily provoked or angered. They are curious and love to play, and with proper care and attention, a lab can make an absolutely marvelous addition to any family.
Training a Labrador Retriever can be a rewarding experience but it is important to understand that these intelligent, active dogs need patience and consistency from their owners. Every dog is an individual and their obedience training needs will vary accordingly. Depending on the specific needs of the dog, some owners may find training a Labrador Retriever fairly easy while others may discover the task can require more effort.
