Questions & Answers
Maltese dogs are considered to be a toy breed, typically weighing between four and seven pounds. They originate from Central Mediterranean region, specifically Malta, and are thought to have existed since antiquity! As one of the oldest-known members of the toy breeds, they were kept as companion dogs by wealthy Europeans, as well as by royalty. Lucky for us today, they still make wonderful companions, and their reputation for loyalty and intelligence is well deserved.
Malteses are generally not a breed that sheds. While they do require routine grooming to keep their long flowing coats looking their best, they are considered to be a generally non-shedding breed of dog. However, it should be noted that all dogs, regardless of breed, will shed some hair in the course of their life. Keeping a Maltese properly groomed and fed can help reduce shedding and make sure that they stay healthy and looking their best. As long as they are properly tended to, Malteses can definitely be considered a low-shedding breed.
It is important to feed your Maltese a quality diet that meets their nutritional needs; this breed is known to be prone to food allergies or sensitivities, so it’s important to talk with your veterinarian about which foods are best to avoid. A high-quality dry kibble formula featuring real meat as the main source of protein is ideal, as it provides a solid nutritional foundation for your pet. As with any pet, offering proteins sourced from fish, such as canned salmon and Cod, can help provide added variety.
In order to become the best puppy parent while waiting for your Maltese, there are a few key steps you should take. First, familiarize yourself with the Maltese breed and its specific needs. Read up on the recommended level of activity and dietary requirements, and research potential health issues the breed may be predisposed to. Second, create a safe and comfortable space in your home. This can include buying toys, bedding, food and water bowls, and a secure kennel. Third, establish a regular routine.
Maltese dogs are small but mighty, with adults reaching an average height of 8-10 inches and a maximum weight of around 7-9 pounds. Despite their diminutive size, these pooches have big, bold personalities! As puppies, Maltese can weigh as little as 4-5 pounds, but they grow quickly and reach their full size by approximately 1 year old. Interestingly, since Maltese lack an undercoat, their fur can sometimes make them seem much larger than they are.
Generally, it is recommended for most small dog breeds to get about 30 minutes of exercise each day, including taking a nice leisurely walk. When it comes specifically to Maltese, however, it is preferable to aim for a longer walk, preferably at least 45 minutes per day. This will keep your Maltese healthy and provide them with enough exercise to remain energetic and sociable. Additionally, it is beneficial to break the walk up into two or three fifteen-minute sections if needed, to ensure your Maltese has enough time to explore and sniff around in a stimulating environment.
Absolutely! Malteses make excellent family dogs. They are loyal and affectionate animals who will bond strongly with their humans. Malteses are also intelligent, so they are relatively easy to train. They don't require a lot of exercise, but they do need attention, grooming, and playtime. Malteses are content to be lap dogs and enjoy spending time with their family. They are generally good with children and other pets, provided they receive the proper socialization early on. All in all, Malteses can be an ideal companion for just about any household.
Training a Maltese is a fun and rewarding experience! The most important thing is to establish firm rules and boundaries and have consistency in rewarding good behavior. First, create a routine for your Maltese. Have meal times at the same time every day and decide when your dog will go to bed and go for walks. Make sure to provide plenty of physical and mental exercise to keep your Maltese stimulated. When it comes to training, start with basic commands such as 'sit' and 'stay'. Have patience and use positive reinforcement, such as treats, toys, and verbal praise.
