Questions & Answers
Maltese dogs have an impressive history, originating from Dalmatia which is now modern-day Croatia. They were believed to have been in existence as early as 1000 BC. According to legend, the intrepid Crusader, Amalfi, paired them with a small breed of lion for the first time. This union created a small, white, fluffy lap dog the Maltese we know and love today. A fun fact about Malteses is that they don't have any shedding undercoat and they are considered hypoallergenic.
The Maltese coat is a unique combination of elegant and luxurious locks. It is soft and silky to the touch, with a very fine texture. It is also very long, often extending to the ground. This luxurious look and feel of the coat have earned the Maltese the title of the "aristocrat of the canine world". The coat may be either silky or wiry, depending on the type of Maltese. The most sought-after color is pure white, although some may have a combination of black, brown and white.
Malteses are small, active dogs that require a balanced diet. They do best on a diet of high-quality dry dog food, supplemented with a variety of fresh foods like vegetables, fruits and small pieces of meat. Foods high in protein such as lean beef, chicken, trout, or salmon should make up the bulk of their diet. Omega-3 fatty acids can also help keep them healthy. Generally, small breeds like Maltese should be given two or three smaller meals throughout the day.
Becoming the best puppy parent begins with research and preparation. Educating yourself prior to welcoming your Maltese home is the key to a successful and stress-free transition for both you and your pup. Take the time to thoroughly read up on your puppy's breed, so you can learn about their temperament and needs. Additionally, you should decide on any training methods and commands you'd like to use ahead of time to ensure consistency.
Malteses are a small breed of dog, so their size tends to stay fairly consistent. Generally, Maltese males are betweed 6-7 inches tall and between 4-6 pounds in weight, while female Maltese stand at around 7-8 inches tall and weigh between 4-6 pounds. However, there are some exceptions to this rule, with some Malteses being smaller or larger than this average range. Ultimately, the size of Malteses can vary depending on individual dogs, their lineage, and the level of care they receive.
An important part of caring for a Maltese is providing it with sufficient exercise. The American Animal Hospital Association recommends that you walk your Maltese for 30 minutes every day. This 30 minutes should be split into two 15 minute walks or three ten minute walks. This will provide your Maltese with the physical activity they need and provide mental stimulation. The exercise should be at a steady pace so your Maltese is able to keep up. You can also supplement their daily walk with other activities such as playtime and running around a fenced-in yard or a dog park.
Malteses are great family dogs and make wonderful companions. They are loyal and affectionate, and their small size makes them manageable and easy to care for. They do well in almost any setting, especially with families. Malteses typically get along very well with children and other animals as long as socialization is provided. With enough exercise and attention, a Maltese can bring joy and unconditional love to a household. They adapt well to routine and training, so they can quickly become accustomed to a new family's schedule.
Training a Maltese takes dedication, patience, and consistency. It is important to find the right balance between encouraging good behavior and maintaining rules and boundaries. Depending on the age of the Maltese, owners will likely have to train basics such as housebreaking and obedience commands. Puppies may need to be taught basic behavior lessons such as not chewing and jumping up until they are fully grown. As with any type of pet, the easier it is to train a Maltese, the better.
