They are named after the Mediterranean island of Malta and have been popular household pets for over 500 years. Malteses are considered a hypoallergenic dog breed and can be considered almost a non-shedding breed. Malteses have hair, rather than fur, and like human hair, it will grow and require regular trips to the groomer for trims. However, Maltaeses don't have an undercoat, which greatly reduces the amount of shedding you would normally see from other breeds. They do not experience seasonal shedding or require frequent brushing at home.
Yes, Malteses do have special dietary needs. They are small breed dogs with a life span of around 12 15 years, so it is important to ensure they receive a high-quality, appropriate diet to enable them to maintain health and vitality throughout their life. As they mature, they require a lower fat and/or calorie diet to prevent obesity and as they age their protein needs may require adjustment to ensure they get adequate nutrition.
