Questions & Answers
Maltese dogs are thought to be the oldest known breed in the world, with their exact origin disputed by experts. They are believed to have descended from the Spitz-type dog but also possible crosses with Poodles, Pomeranians, and other similar breeds. They usually have white coats and have a lifespan of 12-14 years. Although they typically weigh 6-10 pounds, they actually have a great amount of energy and enjoy an active lifestyle. They are also quite intelligent dogs, adept at learning a variety of commands and tricks.
It is often reported that Malteses are non-shedding. However, like any other breed of dog, Malteses do shed a small amount. Most of the shedding occurs during seasonal changes when the dog changes its coat. Although this shedding cannot be completely avoided, it does not require frequent maintenance and can easily be combed out of the Maltese's coat. Therefore, though Malteses do shed, the amount is minimal in comparison to other dogs.
Malteses are a small breed of dog that have hearty appetites. Generally, they require a diet that includes both wet and dry food, as well as a healthy combination of vitamins and minerals. An ideal diet for a Maltese should contain lean proteins, healthy fats, and important minerals and vitamins. The main sources of protein for this breed should come from quality sources such as chicken, beef, fish, and eggs. Healthy fats can be obtained from vegetable oils and certain nuts, such as flaxseed, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds.
Preparing your home for a new Maltese pet can seem like a big task, but it doesn't have to be. Make sure that you purchase the basics in terms of tools, toys and bedding. Also, puppy-proof your home by hiding away and securing cords, cables, and small items. Make sure all hazardous items, such as cleaning and laundry products, are out of reach. Moreover, it's important to research breed specific information so you can get an idea of what to expect in terms of behavior and temperament.
Maltese puppies typically reach their adult size when they are between 8 and 10 months old. An adult Maltese typically stands up to 8-10 inches tall, and weighs between 4 and 6 pounds. However, growth rates, sizes and weights can vary from puppy to puppy, due to individual genetics and lifestyle. Therefore, it is not possible to determine exactly how big your Maltese puppy will be. As your puppy grows and develops, you can monitor the size and weight of your puppy to determine their adult size.
A Maltese should get plenty of exercise to remain healthy, and walking is a great way to let them get that exercise. Generally, a Maltese should be walked at least 20 minutes per day. However, depending on the individual dog's age and activity level, they may need to walk more than that. A good rule of thumb is to give your Maltese at least 40 minutes of walking a day, split into several 15-20 minute sessions. This will help them to stay active and healthy, as well as providing plenty of mental stimulation.
Malteses are often thought to be ideal family dogs because they are intelligent, affectionate, and make loyal and loving companions. Additionally, they are great around children, as they can be gentle and easily trained. However, they do require a lot of grooming, as their long coats tend to get tangled and knotted easily if not taken care of regularly. They are also active dogs and need regular exercise and mental stimulation in order to prevent boredom and destructive behavior.
Training a Maltese can vary depending on the individual pup and how much time and effort you put into it. It does require patience, consistency, and a strong commitment to the process. Although Maltese can be easier to train than some others breeds, it typically takes commitment and dedication to the training process. It may take a few more training sessions at first, but with positive reinforcement and repetition over time they can learn a variety of skills. It's best to start young and introduce them to new environments, people, and commands steadily as they mature.
