Questions & Answers
Malteses may be small, but they have a rich history! Historically, they have been prized by ancient aristocrats and also known as the "comforters' dog" due to their size and gentle demeanor. They're closely related to Bichons and used to be called Maltese Lion Dogs. There's even theories that the breed are descendants of Tibetan dogs or arrived to Europe from the Middle East. Generally, Malteses shed very little and only require a short daily brushing to maintain their coat's pristine whiteness.
The Maltese coat is remarkable and distinctive. It's a long and silky coat that is traditionally white, although cream or pale lemon hues are also common. The coat is beautiful, straight and free of curls, although most Italian-style Maltese have a slight wave. It usually reaches the floor and is profuse, with a single layer stretching from head to tail. The hair on the face and head may be kept short or left in its natural state: long, typically reaching the eyes and the middle of the back.
Malteses eat a variety of food to stay healthy, including high-quality dry kibble or canned food designed specifically for small dogs. They should be given appropriate amounts of food that are age and size-appropriate, as well as any recommended supplements. Finding the right diet will depend on the individual dog, as they may have different dietary needs due to age, breed, health, and activity levels.
Before bringing a new Maltese into your home, there are a few steps you should take to make sure everything is ready. First, you will want to make sure the house is safe and secure, so inspect all of the doors, windows, gates, and fences in order to ensure your Maltese won't be able to escape. Next, you will want to get all of the necessary supplies, such as food, water, bowls, a bed, some toys, and maybe a leash and collar.
Malteses come in a variety of sizes, ranging from small to large. The typical Maltese ranges from 4-7 inches tall and usually weighs between 4-8 pounds. However, teacup Malteses can reach heights of 8 inches or less, and may weigh as little as 3 pounds. Additionally, there are also miniature Malteses, which typically range from 8-12 inches in height and can weigh anywhere between 9-12 pounds. Ultimately, it all depends on the specific breed and the size of the dog being bred.
In general, Maltese dogs should get around 30 minutes of exercise per day. Walking is an excellent way to help your Maltese stay active, as it's a low-impact activity that helps keep their muscles and bones healthy. It's recommended that you break your Maltese's daily activity into multiple 10-15 minute sessions of brisk walking. This way, your pet can enjoy a relaxed walk and receive ample activity to prevent boredom, obesity, and muscle loss. Additionally, walking your Maltese is excellent for bonding and creates opportunities for mental stimulation.
Malteses are definitely a great choice for families looking to adopt a canine companion! This small breed of dog is typically gentle, obedient, and loves spending time with people. As such, Malteses make loyal and affectionate companions for children who want to develop a bond with their furry friend. Furthermore, Malteses don't require a lot of space, making them an ideal pet for those living in urban settings with limited room. Moreover, their compact size makes them easier to handle during walks and trips.
Training a Maltese can certainly be easy if approached the right way. It's important to keep in mind that Maltese are a high-energy breed, so you'll want to start by ensuring the pup gets a good amount of exercise and playtime each day. This can help to channel some of that extra energy and help prevent behavioral issues from developing. Along with plenty of consistent positive reinforcement, setting boundaries and providing structure will help your Maltese to understand what is expected of them.
