Questions & Answers
A Maltipoo is a designer breed of dog that is a cross between a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. These cute, friendly, and smart dogs get their name from the combination of their parents' breed names. Maltipoos range in size based on their parents' size, but many will range between four and nine pounds, making them an ideal companion pet. These small dogs have an abundant coat that is usually curly, and colors range from white, tan, and apricot to even black and grey.
Maltipoos are considered a low-shedding and low-dander breed of dog, which makes them ideal for households that have allergies or sensitivities to pet hair. While they do still experience a shedding cycle, Maltipoos are bred and bred-crossed specifically to reduce their shedding amount. An additional plus with their low-shedding coats is that they are hypoallergenic, meaning they generate very little dander.
Feeding your Maltipoo the right combination of nutrition can help maintain their overall health, growth and development. You should look for a complete and balanced food specifically designed for the needs of a small breed puppy and adult. As your Maltipoo grows, switch to an adult diet that is consistent with their changing needs. You will also want to be sure the diet you select meets the nutritional standards set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials.
Becoming the best puppy parent while waiting for your Maltipoo is an admirable goal! The best thing you can do is to research the breed familiarizing yourself with the common characteristics and looking into potential health risks. Additionally, decide what you will use to house train the puppy (whether that's crate-training, papertraining, etc.), and prepare the necessary supplies beforehand. You will also want to read up on proper nutrition, as diets can vary from breed to breed.
Maltipoos are the result of crossing a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle, and can usually range from 4 to 15 pounds when fully grown. Depending on the size of their parents, most Maltipoos will reach their full size between 8-12 months of age. The smallest Maltipoos are usually from 8 to 10 inches at the shoulder, while the largest tend to reach 10 to 15 inches. Generally, males will be larger than females, although some female Maltipoos may be larger than their male counterparts.
Maltipoos are small, energetic dogs that typically require a good amount of exercise. As with other breeds of small dogs, Maltipoos need sufficient daily activity to prevent weight gain and maintain overall health. Exercise is also important as it satisfies their mental and physical needs and helps prevent boredom-related behavioral issues. Generally, a Maltipoo should have at least 20-30 minutes of exercise per day that includes structured or “enrichment” activities like fetch, agility, walking, or jogging and off-leash playtime.
Maltipoos, also known as "Maltese Poodle," are beloved for their friendly and intelligent personalities, which makes them great companions for children of all ages. Not only are they easy to train and intellectually stimulating, they also enjoy playing and being around people. Maltipoos are loyal and attentive dogs, which makes them great at forming a bond with their owners and those close to them. Most Maltipoos get along well with other members of the family, including kids, and are a great fit if you're looking for a family companion that is gentle and loves to have fun.
Training your Maltipoo begins with providing basic obedience training. Start by teaching your pooch simple commands such as “sit”, “down”, “stay”, and “come”. Positive reinforcement is key; focus on rewarding your pup with verbal praise, treats, and affection when they do something right. It’s also important to keep the training sessions short and fun to keep your Maltipoo engaged. Each session should be no longer than 10 minutes. You should also practice the commands regularly.
