Maltipoos are a hybrid breed of dog resulting from the cross-breeding of a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. They are intelligent, loving, and clingy dogs who seek to gain their owner's affection and love to be around their "pack". Maltipoos should be brushed routinely to help keep their coat healthy and groomed. They enjoy regular exercise and daily walks, but be careful as Maltipoos can tire more quickly than larger breeds due to their small size.
Maltipoos may be considered hypoallergenic, as they are a cross between a Maltese and Poodle; both of which are known for having low levels of dander, which produces fewer allergies. That said, every breed and even individual dog can produce an allergic response, so it's impossible to guarantee that a Maltipoo is 100% hypoallergenic. Therefore, if you or a member of your family is known to be allergic to certain breeds, it's important to test their reaction with the Maltipoo before making the commitment to the dog.
Maltipoos do indeed have some special dietary considerations. While not strictly required, high quality dog food specifically formulated to meet the nutritional needs of smaller dogs is recommended as part of a Maltipoo's diet. Additionally, these hybrid dogs may benefit from supplements such as Omega fatty acids, glucosamine, chondroitin, and probiotics. Furthermore, Maltipoos are prone to tooth decay, so limiting their intake of sugar and grains is advised. Lastly, it's important to remember that Maltipoos should have access to clean, fresh water at all times.
Prior to bringing a new Maltipoo home, there are some steps you should take to ensure your home is prepared. Make sure to do a deep cleaning of your house, especially the areas your pup will frequent. Additionally, it is important to set up specific areas for feeding, sleeping, and playing. Having a dedicated space for each activity will make it easier to train your pup. If possible provide soft bedding or padding to provide comfortable sleeping and playing areas. Maltipoos come in a variety of sizes, depending on their parent breeds. Typically they are classified as Toy, Miniature or Standard. A Toy Maltipoo usually stands 8 to 10 inches at the shoulders and weighs 4 to 6 pounds. A Miniature Maltipoo usually stands 11 to 14 inches at the shoulders and weighs 7 to 12 pounds, while a Standard Maltipoo usually stands 15 to 17 inches at the shoulders and weighs 13 to 22 pounds. Maltipoos are also bred in Teacup sizes and Micro sizes, but these sizes can be more difficult to find.
Maltipoos require moderate physical activity to stay healthy and in shape. Generally, thirty minutes of exercise daily, such as a walk, jog, or game of fetch, is a good amount for a Maltipoo. Depending on the age and health of the pup, however, this number may increase or decrease. For example, if your puppy is younger, the amount of exercise should be adjusted accordingly and may require up to 1 hour of exercise. Additionally, if your Maltipoo is elderly or has any underlying medical deficiencies, lower-impact exercises may be necessary.
