Questions & Answers
Maltipoos, also known as Maltepoos and Malt-A-Poos, are a delightful, spunky hybrid breed of designer dogs created by crossing a Maltese with a Poodle. They are known for their hypoallergenic properties, extreme intelligence, and friendly personality. Fun facts about Maltipoos include that they come in a variety of colors, usually white, apricot, brown, or black, and they do not shed or slobber.
Yes, Maltipoos are considered a hypoallergenic breed because they are a hybrid of a Maltese and a Toy Poodle. These two breeds have low levels of shedding which makes them essentially non-shedding, so they do not produce much dander which can cause allergic reactions. The Maltese breed is particularly low in dander due to the fact that they don't possess an undercoat like most breeds. Furthermore, when breeds are mixed, they tend to take on the characteristics that are more desirable.
Maltipoos are small, hybrid dogs that can have different looks and temperaments depending on their specific mix of Maltese and Poodle genetics. As such, their dietary needs also vary, but in general, a balanced diet is best for a Maltipoo. This should include high-quality, commercial dry food as well as protein-rich treats, as recommended by your vet. You should also supplement your pet's diet with lean sources of protein, including lean beef and chicken, as well as grains like brown rice.
Becoming the best puppy parent while you wait for your Maltipoo is something that starts even before you bring your pup home. Research breeds, life-stage nutrition requirements, and local ordinances regarding owning and caring for a pet. Innoculate yourself with knowledge and make sure you have the necessary materials such as food, water, and training supplies on hand. Additionally, start establishing a routine that works for your pup, including set meal times, established areas for sleeping and playing, and regular potty trips. This gives your pup a sense of security and helps with training and housebreaking.
Maltipoos come in a variety of sizes, ranging from tiny Toy Maltipoos, to the larger size of Standard Maltipoos. Toy Maltipoos usually grow to around 5-10 pounds fully grown, while Standard Maltipoos may grow to around 15-20 pounds fully grown. Generally, the smaller Toy Maltipoos are bred to have a fluffy coat, while the Standard Maltipoos are bred to have a sleeker, low-shedding coat. Whichever size you prefer, they both make wonderful, loyal companions that fit into most any size family or living situation.
The amount of time you should walk your Maltipoo each day depends on several factors, such as the dog's age and activity level. When it comes to exercise, a general rule of thumb is that puppies should get five minutes of exercise per month of age, so a 3-month-old should receive a 15-minute walk each day and a 6-month-old should get a 30-minute walk. Adult Maltipoos should typically get around 45 minutes of exercise per day, and this can be broken up into multiple smaller walks throughout the day.
Maltipoos are great family pets that are well-suited to households with children. They have a gentle and loving nature which makes them ideal for households with kids; Maltipoos are known for their patience and loyal temperament. As with all breeds, you should introduce children to your Maltipoo gradually and ensure that all interactions are supervised. However, given their friendly and calm nature, Maltipoos tend to be great companions for kids, doing their best to please their young owners.
Training a Maltipoo requires consistency and patience. To begin, start with simple commands, such as 'sit' or 'stay'. Once your pup has mastered those commands, you can work on larger tasks like walking on a leash, coming when called and leaving objects when asked. It is important to reward the pup when they have completed a task so that they learn to associate completing a task with a reward. Additionally, incorporating treats into the training is a wonderful form of positive reinforcement. Scheduling regular training sessions is beneficial to help keep the pup focused and engaged, and also to build routine behaviors.
