Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a designer breed of dog most notably a hybrid of a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. It is a relatively new breed of pup and has been gaining more popularity over the past decade. These designer pups typically have the same physical characteristics of a Husky but with a more petite frame – they range from 8-15 inches tall at the shoulders, and weigh from 15-30 pounds at maturity. Additionally, Pomskies tend to have the striking coat coloring of Huskies and that signature Pomeranian fluffiness.
The Pomsky coat is well-known for its soft, fluffy feel and comes in a variety of colors and markings. This breed is usually a combination of the colors and markings of both the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian, so depending on the parents, each coat color is unique. On average, it is medium in length, having a thick under-layer that helps keep it warm during cold weather and a coarser upper-layer to protect it from the elements. The colors usually range from black and white, to shades of tan, grey and red.
Pomskies are quite energetic and active dogs, so they require a well-balanced diet to give them the energy to keep up with their lifestyle. Pomskies can be fed either a commercially-prepared, high-quality dog food made specifically for their breed and size, or a homemade diet of fresh, human-grade ingredients such as lean meats, grains, fruits, and vegetables. Some owners choose to give their Pomskies a little bit of both, as this helps to provide some variety to their diet as well as balance out the nutrients they need.
Becoming the best puppy parent while waiting for a Pomsky can be an exciting but daunting prospect. To ensure your new arrival is welcomed into a loving and positive environment, however, there are some important considerations to keep in mind. Researching the breed and its associated needs, preparing your home for the pup and having training and behavioral plans prepared prior to their arrival will ensure a smooth and seamless integration. By signing up for webinars, training courses and talking with experienced breeders, you can obtain valuable information that will assist you on your puppy parenting journey.
Pomskies, which is a mix of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, generally range in size from 10 to 20 inches tall and 15 to 30 pounds. This makes them a smaller-sized hybrid dog that is ideal for living in city apartments and suburban households. When full-grown, the two breeds that were crossed to create this designer mix, they take on the more petite stature of the Pomeranian; however, they may still exhibit some of the more robust behavior and personality of the Siberian Husky.
On average, it is recommended that Pomskies get 30 minutes of exercise each day. This time should be divided into two 15-minute sessions of walking or light jogging, depending on the age and fitness level of your pup. If your Pomsky is very active, it is not a bad idea for that second session to be a few minutes longer, with a total of 20 to 25 minutes each day. That being said, no two dogs are the same, so it might be best to start with a lower exercise goal and gradually increase the time as you find your pup builds up endurance.
Pomskies have a natural tendency to be patient and gentle, making them excellent companions and potential friends with children. They are a hybrid dog breed that is known for their intelligence and loving personalities and generally get along well with kids. Pobskies crave human companionship, which makes them loyal and devoted to their families, including any children. Plus, they are highly affectionate and playful, so they can keep up with any level of energy and attention that a child may have, while also providing valuable lessons in responsibility.
Training a Pomsky is not necessarily easy and will require patience and dedication; however, they can be very smart and extremely motivated to learn. With a few simple tips and guidance, it is possible to make the process of training a Pomsky enjoyable and rewarding. It is important to establish a good relationship with your Pomsky upon introduction and to give them plenty of positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise, when they do something right. It can be helpful to start out slowly with basic commands and then progress to more complicated commands and behavior.
