Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a designer dog created by cross-breeding a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. Pomskies tend to be small and have a fluffy coat, with a similarly lovable personality and intelligence as both of their parent breeds. Pomskies have become increasingly popular due to their impressive looks and gentle nature. Generally, these dogs also have excellent health and adapt quickly to new environments. They make great companions for apartment dwellers as well as those with a large back yard, as long as their needs are met.
Pomskies, a hybrid of a Pomeranian and a Husky, are a low-shedding breed. The Pomeranian is a double-coated breed, meaning it has both a soft downy undercoat and a long standing outer coat, both of which are relatively easy to maintain with regular grooming. On the other hand, the Husky is a single-coated breed with a short, thick coat of fur and does not have as much hair shed as the Pomeranian.
Pomskies are generally considered to be a healthy, active breed and, as such, their dietary needs are not too different from other dogs. All breeds and types of dog need a nutrient-rich diet to remain at peak health, but a Pomsky should have slightly fewer calories, specifically tailored to their size and activity level. An ideal Pomsky diet should consist of quality, grain-free kibble, which is specifically balanced for dogs of their size and physique.
To prepare your home for your new Pomsky, start by designating a space for them to sleep and for their food and water bowls. Make sure there are no chairs, footstools, and other small furniture near their bed to avoid them jumping on them and hurting themselves. Create a safe space in the home that has a place for the Pomsky to relax, such as a crate or comfortable chair. Pet-proof your home, including making sure any electrical wires, cords, or remotes are out of reach.
The size of your Pomsky puppy may vary upon the genes inherited from its parents. Generally, Pomskies can reach sizes between 10 and 25 pounds, with a coat that is particularly dense and fluffy. However, the combination of Pomeranian and Siberian Husky in their gene pool makes the Pomsky an unpredictable mix. It is possible for some Pomskies to reach up to 30 pounds depending on their genetics. It is also important to consider that Pomskies do not reach their full size until around 12 months old.
Pomskies require about an hour of exercise per day to maintain physical and mental wellbeing. This can take the form of a long walk or run, as well as an interactive game such as fetch or frisbee. This daily activity is especially important for a young and energetic pup, as insufficient exercise may lead to behavioral issues, such as restlessness, barking and aggressiveness. Furthermore, just like any other breed, they need mental stimulation too, such as teaching them to learn new tricks, socializing with other friendly dogs, and going on exciting outings.
Pomskies are often affectionately referred to as the "most loving dogs in the world", so it is no surprise that they are actually great around kids. Pomskies have a gentle, loving nature and love being near people, especially their family. They bond quickly with everyone and are fiercely loyal, so they make excellent playmates for kids. They are usually gentle and tolerant to rough kid play, but they can also be quite playful and silly. Pomskies are highly trainable, so basic commands and cues will help keep kids and dogs safe and happy.
Pomskies are an intelligent and curious hybrid dog, so training them is an important part of creating a successful relationship. When it comes to training, consistency is key. Make sure to be consistent with both words and rewards. Establish a routine and give them lots of positive reinforcement to reward good behavior. Always be patient with your Pomsky and be sure to provide plenty of verbal praise too. Avoid scolding or punishing your pup; instead focus on the desired behavior. Consider enrolling in a formal training class or hiring a professional trainer to help you create consistent rules and commands.
