Pomskies are a very unique breed of dog that have recently become popular. They are a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky which gives them a beautiful coat of fur that may be black, white, gray, or a combination of the three. They are also particularly smart and have been known to learn tricks quickly. In addition, Pomskies can be quite energetic and lively, enjoying daily walks and playing with toys.
The Pomsky is an adorable and unique hybrid dog, and their coats tend to vary depending on the coat of their parents, who are Siberian Huskies and Pomeranians. Typically, a Pomsky's coat is dense and fluffy, with the Pomeranian often contributing a longer, soft fur and the Husky a thicker, coarse one. The coat can be a variety of colors, including black and white, red and white, and many shades of brown.
Pomskies typically enjoy the same diet as any other small-to-medium sized dog. This usually consists of premium-grade dry dog food, as well as fresh, lean meats and healthy proteins that are meant to be part of a balanced diet. Supplementations of other wet foods and snacks are also recommended, as long as they are formulated to meet the specific dietary needs of the breed.
Preparing your home for a new Pomsky can be easier than you think! Before your pup arrives, you should puppy-proof your home as much as possible. Make sure to check for any unsafe or exposed wires and remove any items dangerous/toxic to puppies. Secondly, you should buy all the necessary supplies in advance and set up a designated space. This includes their crate, a comfortable bed, toys, a water and food bowl, quality food and treat, and puppy snacks.
It can be difficult to predict how big a Pomsky puppy will grow. Generally speaking though, the pup will usually reach an adult size of around 10-15 pounds, although it can sometimes reach as much as 25 pounds depending on the size of the parents. Generally, Pomskies will reach their full adult size between 12 and 14 months old, although this can vary platform to dog. While your pup's size may vary, most are quite compact and incredibly cute!
Pomskies, being part active and part companion dogs, need a moderate amount of exercise. As with any breed, their exact exercise needs will vary slightly depend on their temperament and age. Generally speaking, they should get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. This can come in the form of walks, runs, or playtime. If they are allowed off-leash, they should be in a secure area such as a fenced in yard.
Pomskies are generally wonderful with kids. They are affectionate and loyal, so they make terrific companions. Since they are friendly towards people, they're often referred to as a "people-pleaser." Despite their small size, they have a lot of energy and enjoy playtime with kids. Plus, they're very intelligent, so they can easily catch on to commands and even do fun tricks. With proper socialization and training, they do very well when interacting with children.
Training your Pomsky requires having the right commands in place, a consistent and cheerful attitude from you, and plenty of patience and treats! Be sure to provide lots of positive reinforcement with treats and verbal praise whenever your Pomsky follows your commands. Practice the same command regularly as this will train your Pomsky to associate rewards with completing a behavior. Ensure that your commands are consistent and don't change based on the situation. Additionally, keep your training sessions short and fun--your Pomsky will respond better to short, positive session than drawn out, overly-stressful ones.
