Questions & Answers
Poodles are popular pets and have a surprisingly varied history. While typically associated with France, poodles actually originated in Germany as hunting dogs. They continue to possess excellent skills at detecting and tracking game such as birds, rabbits, and waterfowl. Despite their sometimes snooty appearance, these dogs are known for being intelligent, sweet-natured, and obedient. They have been shown to have excellent memories, allowing them to perform complex tricks. Thanks to their dense, curly coat, poodles have even been used as rescue and self-defense dogs in icy waters.
Poodles are widely thought of as a non-shedding breed, but the reality is that, while they tend to shed less than other breeds, they are not 100% non-shedding. The American Kennel Club states that Poodles shed very lightly, and the amount of shedding depends on a range of factors such as stress, nutrition, and the coat type (including differences between standard, miniature, and toy Poodles).
Poodles do have special dietary needs, as their dietary requirements differ from those of other breeds of dogs. They are very active dogs, so they need a meal plan that is higher in calories than that of other breeds. A diet rich in protein and carbohydrates is best for poodles, as it will help to support their active lifestyle. Additionally, poodles are prone to ear infections, so their diet should include ample amounts of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids to help prevent these.
Becoming the best puppy parent while waiting for your Poodle requires dedication and planning ahead. Start by researching common breeds and learning their specific needs. Find out what type of diet they should have, what to do in case of an emergency, and what kind of exercise and playtime they need. Then, once you have an understanding of what their needs are, purchase some supplies such as a bed, rabbit fur, kennel and collar, food and water bowl, toys, and an outdoor area for running and exploring.
Poodles come in four sizes, Toy, Miniature, Medium, and Standard. Toy Poodles are usually 10 inches tall, not taller than 11 inches, and weigh between 4-6 pounds. Miniature Poodles generally range from 11-15 inches in height and weigh between 10-15 pounds. Medium Poodles generally measure 15-20 inches and weigh between 15-20 pounds. Standard Poodles are over 20 inches tall and weigh between 40-50 pounds or more.
The number of minutes spent walking a Poodle per day should vary depending upon the individual dog and its age, size, and activity level. Generally, adult Poodles need at least a 30-minute daily walk as it is essential for their overall health and well-being. On average, Poodle puppies need less exercise than adults, but 15-minute walks multiple times a day are recommended. However, unneutered male Poodles need more physical activity than neutered or spayed Poodles.
Poodles are wonderful pets that get along well with children and make great family companions. Many consider the Poodle to be a very intelligent and loyal breed that is great for households with kids. Poodles are known for being very gentle and friendly and have a willing temperament to learn and please, making them one of the top breeds for family interaction. Additionally, Poodles can often change their personalities to be more timid or playful depending on what the situation is, making them great for both rowdy household activities or quiet snuggling.
Training your Poodle is an important part of pet ownership and should be done regularly. To start, use positive reinforcement such as treats, hugs, and verbal praise. Teach your Poodle basic commands like 'sit', 'stay', and 'come' as well as obedience commands such as 'heel' and 'down'. Set aside a few minutes a day for training sessions during which you should be consistent and patient with your commands. Establish a safe learning area with few distractions and always end your training session on a positive note.
