Questions & Answers
Poodles are one of the oldest breeds of dog, with records of their existence dating back over 400 years. They are widely recognized for their intelligence and ability to learn quickly. Poodles come in a range of sizes and colors; standard poodles range from 15-22 inches at the shoulder, miniature poodles between 11-14 inches, and toy poodles 8" and under. Although they are well-known as a fancy show dog, they have a long history of performing circus tricks, an aptitude that makes them a versatile working dog and ideal companion pet.
Poodles have a thick, soft and luxurious coat that is resistant to matting and tangles. They come in a variety of colors, including black, silver, gray, white, cafe au lait, apricot, and red. The Poodle coat consists of both an undercoat and a longer coat of profuse curls. It is known for its water-repelling abilities and can be styled naturally curly, permed, clipped in a traditional lion-cut, or any other imaginative trim.
Poodles are relatively easy to feed since they are omnivores, but always make sure to provide a balanced diet that has adequate amounts of the nutrients they need. A good diet should include lean protein sources like fish, chicken, eggs, and legumes, as well as high-quality carbohydrates like oatmeal, brown rice, and potatoes. Fresh fruits and vegetables can also help round out the diet. Additionally, consider adding some supplements to help ensure the necessary amounts of vitamins and minerals are met.
Becoming the best puppy parent while you wait for your Poodle is an exciting opportunity! Three key areas to focus on are: nutrition, exercise and training. Start researching diets suited to the Poodle's age and activity level. Include proper amounts of protein and carbohydrates, as well as fatty acids. Exercise can come in the form of short walks and play time to encourage healthy development. Finally, start training your pet at an early age. Establish house and crate training rules, and set a consistent routine for them to follow.
Poodles come in four different standard sizes, determined by the height of the dog at the highest point of the shoulder. The four sizes are Toy Poodles, which measure 10 inches or under; Miniature Poodles, measuring over 10 and up to 15 inches; Standard Poodles, measuring over 15 inches and up to 21 inches; and finally, the Giant Poodle, measuring over 21 inches. Each size of Poodle can be further divided into three different coat types; solid colored, parti-colored and phantom.
Walking your Poodle for at least 15 minutes per day is recommended for their physical and mental wellbeing. That 15 minutes should be at least two 5-10 minute walks and then further 5-minute interludes of activity such as playing fetch or running around in the yard. If possible, it's best to try to make those 15 minutes part of a daily routine which should also include good nutrition and consistent training. Keep in mind the breed's activity needs; a Poodle can generally do up to 40 minutes of exercise per day.
Poodles can be wonderful family dogs! They are incredibly loyal, intelligent, and affectionate. Not only that, but they tend to get along well with any other animals in the household and may even become protective of their family members. Their activity level varies, but they do need daily exercise and entertainment. As long as their physical, mental, and emotional needs are met, poodles make excellent family pets that bring lots of joy and love to a home.
Absolutely! Poodles are highly intelligent and easily trainable due to their quick thinking and active minds. Intelligent, eager to learn and highly adaptable, poodles are known to pick up new tasks quickly and often surprise their owners with their willingness to please. In fact, according to the American Poodle Club, poodles generally rank in the top ten smartest dog breeds. And with proper training, poodles are capable of mastering a wide variety of commands and skills to please their owners.
