Questions & Answers
Poodles are a smart and loyal breed of dog that have been a popular pet for centuries. They are generally easy to train, playful, and come in a variety of sizes, such as Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Healthwise, they are generally a healthy breed with an average lifespan of 10-14 years, however, they can be susceptible to certain diseases and conditions such as hip dysplasia and bloat, so regular check-ups are essential.
Poodles are a non-shedding breed of dog. This is due to their coat, which is made up of tightly curled, single-layer fur. This means that they don't shed or drop hair like many other breeds, making them ideal for people with allergies who cannot tolerate animal fur. Poodles require frequent grooming to keep their coats tangle-free, however, and if neglected this can result in matting, causing the dog unnecessary pain and discomfort.
Poodles are a very intelligent and active breed of dog, and as such, their meals should be carefully planned. You should feed your Poodle a nutritionally balanced and complete diet, specially formulated for this breed, that contains an appropriate blend of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Dry kibble is an excellent type of diet for Poodles, as is a combination of wet food and dry food.
Before bringing home a new Poodle, it's a good idea to have the home ready. First, puppy-proof the home by removing any small items the pup may be tempted to chew on. Make sure any potentially hazardous items are out of reach, and that there are no easily digestible items on the floor. Next, ensure there is an appropriate area set up for their bed where they can relax in peace and comfort. Have food and water dishes ready as well as any toys and treats you want them to experience when they first arrive.
Poodles come in many different sizes that breeders and owners will recognize. The AKC (American Kennel Club) recognizes 3 sizes: Standard Poodle, Miniature Poodle, Toy Poodle all members of one breed. Standard Poodles are typically 15" at the shoulder or taller, Miniature Poodles are 15" or less at the shoulder and Toy Poodles are 10" or less at the shoulder. Additionally, there are Teacup Poodles which are four pounds or less and rarely ever grow more than 8" at the shoulder.
It can be hard to determine exactly how many minutes per day you should be walking your Poodle. The amount of exercise they need is dependent on their age, size and energy levels. For most adult Poodles, 30-45 minutes per day of exercise is usually appropriate; however, this can vary depending on your specific pet. On particularly hot, cold, or humid days, it is important to be mindful of your Poodle's safety and reduce this amount of time.
Poodles are a great breed of dog for those with kids. Thanks to their intelligence, friendly personalities, and loyalty, these dogs are great companions for older children. Poodles are easily trainable which makes them great for teaching to follow basic commands. They are also very playful and affectionate, making them great for interacting with kids and having fun. When socialized and properly trained, these dogs get along with everyone including other dogs and cats. As a result, they make a great addition to any family with young children.
Training a Poodle should begin in puppyhood and continue throughout the course of its life. A good foundation of training is established when the puppy is first welcomed into its new home by socializing it with people and teaching it the basics of basic manners, such as sit/stay/come when called, not jumping on people and furniture, and not barking or making other nuisance noises. After these basic commands are established, one should move on to teaching the dog additional tricks, such as how to cautiously explore objects and places, recall, walking nicely on a leash, and dealing with distractions.
