Questions & Answers
Poodles are often thought of as the classic lap dog, but there is a lot to this breed that many people don't know! They are one of the oldest domesticated breeds of dog and can be tracked back to the early 15th century. They come in a variety of sizes and can be seen as toy, miniature, and standard size. Interestingly, the toy Poodle didn't become well known until the 16th century.
Poodles are sometimes described as hypoallergenic, but this is an overgeneralization. While it is true that most poodles don't shed and produce very little dander, it is important to understand that no breed of dog is completely hypoallergenic. Similarly, poodles may still trigger allergic reactions in some people, due to their coat and saliva. Those with allergies should carefully consider all breeds of dogs before making a decision about which one to adopt, or consult a doctor for an individual assessment.
Poodles are omnivorous animals, which means that they eat both plant-based foods and some animal proteins. Some of the best foods to feed your poodle include high-quality kibble, fresh fruits and vegetables, and meats such as poultry, fish, and fresh cuts of lean beef. Avoid feeding your poodle dog food that contains corn, wheat, or soy products, as these ingredients can be difficult for them to digest. Additionally, limit treats as they can contribute to health problems such as obesity.
To prepare your home for your new Poodle, begin by making sure your space is safe and secure. Make sure any potentially hazardous items like electrical cords and houseplants are moved out of their reach, and that all windows, doors, and entrances are properly secured if the pup will be unsupervised. Consider investing in a high-quality toy box and a few different types of chew toys, and create a designated safe space for them and their bedding to ensure they are comfortable. Additionally, make sure all other family members and housemates understand the importance of keeping the pup safe.
Poodle sizes can vary, depending on the breed you've chosen. Generally speaking, the Standard Poodle is the largest, with a standard weight range of 40 70 pounds; Miniature Poodles typically weigh between 10 15 pounds; and Toy Poodles can be as small as 4 or 5 pounds. Your Poodle puppy may stay relatively close to their adult size, but they may need to grow into it. The growth rate can vary depending on many factors, so you may want to get periodic measurements to make sure they are growing properly.
Poodles are active, intelligent dogs that require regular physical activity, mental stimulation, and social interaction. Depending on the age, breed, and size of the poodle, they will need anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours of exercise a day, at least five days a week. For smaller poodles, two daily walks should suffice; exercise should be tailored to each individual's energy level. Heavier exercise such as running, swimming, or agility training can be done on the weekends.
Poodles certainly make excellent family dogs. They are intelligent, loyal, and devoted, making them great companions. Additionally, they are gentle and sensitive, so they are well-suited to families with kids. In addition to being good-natured, Poodles are usually easy to train and enjoy being active. They love to be around their families, whether it's going for a walk or just hanging out indoors. As for temperament, a Poodle's moderate energy and calm demeanor makes them well-rounded household members.
Training a Poodle requires patience, consistency and positive reinforcement. Begin by teaching them their name and simple commands such as 'sit', 'stay', 'come', and 'down'. Provide treats, praise and petting for correct responses. Once those tasks are mastered, move on to more difficult commands such as 'roll-over' or 'speak'. Establishing a daily training regimen is important. Work on mastering one trick at a time and don't move on until your pup has mastered it.
