Questions & Answers
Poodles are a highly intelligent and dignified breed of dog, recognizable for their curly hair. Despite their elegant appearance, these playful and affectionate canines are also known for their high energy level, infectious enthusiasm and joy of life. Poodles are quite easy to train; they need regular exercise, mental stimulation and plenty of positive reinforcement. As a naturally clean, friendly and sociable breed, Poodles do well when they are socialized early. They are also generally good with other animals and people.
Poodles boast an impressive, low-shedding and hypoallergenic coat made up of texture curls or cords. This coat can be cut to vary from a full-bodied puppy clip to a continental or teddy bear look. The Poodle coat requires regular brushing, trimming every 6 to 8 weeks, and occasional bathing. Depending on the clip, they require professional grooming but they can be made to look like a cute, sassy teddy bear, or a glamorous show dog.
Poodles are a highly intelligent and friendly dog breed, and feeding them a balanced diet is an important part of being a responsible owner. When considering what to feed your Poodle, look for a high-quality dry kibble that is formulated for the specific size and needs of your pup. Having the recommended daily amount of proteins, carbs, vitamins and minerals is essential for keeping your pup healthy and full of energy.
Prior to bringing your new Poodle home, it is important to prepare your home for their arrival. Start by puppy-proofing remove any dangerous items or items that could be easily chewed or ingested and make sure all objects are not within reach. To get your pup accustomed to the home, plug in a pheromone diffuser before bringing the pup home this can help the pup feel calm and secure. Set up a sleeping area for the pup and make sure there is access to food, water, and toys.
Poodles come in all sizes, from Teacup to Standard. Teacup poodles usually range from 4-6 pounds at full grown weight and usually stand 8 inches at the shoulder. Toy poodles range from 6-9 pounds and about 10 inches tall at the shoulders. Miniature poodles are usually between 10 and 15 pounds, standing 11-14 inches at the shoulder, and the Standard Poodle is the largest of the breed, usually weighing between 40-70 pounds and standing 15-22 inches at the shoulder.
It is recommended that an adult Poodle be provided with a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise per day. However, depending on your Poodle's age, activity level, and overall health, you may want to consider increasing your Poodle's daily walking time. If your Poodle is more energetic and loves to exercise, a 45 to 60-minute walk each day would be ideal. If your Poodle's exercise needs are more moderate, then 30 to 45 minutes of daily walking is generally sufficient.
Absolutely! Poodles make excellent family pets for many reasons. One, they're loyal and smart, easily able to understand and obey commands. Two, they’re alert and energetic, and make for an amusing companion. Three, they're easy to groom, mostly needing nothing more than a daily brush and bath every few months. Plus, they're hypoallergenic, so they’re a great pet for those with allergies.
Training a Poodle is not necessarily an easy task. As any breed of dog, Poodles respond best to a consistent training approach that is based on positive reinforcement. To ensure a successful training experience, the owner should use achievable goals, constructive consequences, and positive feedback. Training can be more successful if done in small increments, as Poodles can be easily distracted and may not retain sustained focus for long periods of time.
