Questions & Answers
Poodles are not only the cutest dogs, but also the oldest! The breed originated in Germany and has been recognized by the American Kennel Club since 1887. They come in three size varieties Standard, Miniature, and Toy and are known for their high intelligence and trainability. What many people don’t know is that they are also terrific swimmers and very active! Poodles have excellent endurance and love activities like agility training and playing games. They have an uncanny ability to perform complex tricks and many varieties can even learn to play the piano.
The Poodle coat is unique in its variety of textures, colors, and cuts. This breed’s signature look is the curly, puffy coat that's instantly recognizable. The Poodle's thick, curly coat requires regular grooming, clipping, and brushing to maintain its health and look. Some breeds have a distinctive “sheared” layer at the top that creates a uniform pom-pom look. They also feature a wavy, water-resistant undercoat that provides protection from harsh weather.
Poodles are intelligent, active dogs that require a balanced, nutritious diet to stay healthy. Depending on age, size and activity level, Poodles require a diet of high-quality dog food specially formulated for their breed, supplemented with a variety of proteins, vegetables, and grains. A Poodle's main diet should include lean proteins such as lean beef, fish, and poultry, carbohydrates such as rice and sweet potatoes, plus plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits. It's also important to provide healthy fats like olive oil, and essential vitamins and minerals.
Preparing your home for your new Poodle is an important step for a successful transition. You'll want to start by making sure your home is both safe and comfortable for your pup. To do this, you'll want to secure any hazardous areas of your home, such as sweeping up any loose nails, blocking off any areas with stairs, removing any cords from within reach of your puppy and child-proofing your home.
Poodles come in three different sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. Standard Poodles generally grow to stand 15-20 inches high at the shoulder and weigh between 40 and 70 pounds when fully grown. Miniature Poodles are typically no taller than 15 inches at the shoulder and weigh 15-17 pounds when grown. Toy Poodles, the smallest of the three size categories, mature at 10 inches in height and generally weigh only 4-6 pounds.
Poodles are an active sporting breed and require regular exercise to stay happy and healthy. Generally, Poodles need a minimum of 45-60 minutes of exercise per day. Although not strictly necessary, it's best to engage in activities with your Poodle that combines both physical and mental stimulation, such as slow walks, runs, hikes, and play fetch. Introducing new activities, like swimming and agility training, can also provide your Poodle with a great source of daily exercise.
Poodles are often beloved family dogs, and they make wonderful canine companions for kids. These intelligent and loyal pups are known for their even temperaments and abundant affection, which makes them well-suited to families of all sizes. Although they respond well to firm, consistent training, they don't tend to be overly protective or territorial. Poodles are social animals who need plenty of love and attention, so it's important to provide them with the proper care and lifestyle. With their friendly nature and trainability, poodles can be wonderful additions to homes with children.
Training your Poodle is essential in order to ensure the best behavior from your pup. To start, it's important to set a specific routine, be consistent, and remain positive with your pup. Be sure to reward your pup with treats for positive behavior, build trust and respect, and have regular short training sessions throughout the day. When training, it's best to stick to simple commands such as "sit" and "come”. Gradually build up to more complicated commands and continue using rewards to acknowledge correct behavior.
