Questions & Answers
Poodles are incredibly smart and make great family pets. They are easily trained and respond quickly to commands. Poodles come in three sizes toy, miniature, and standard. They do not shed much and their coats need regular grooming and trimming. They can also be found in a variety of colors including black, white, gray, and silver. Poodles don't carry a doggy odor and are known for their gracious and alert character. As such, the poodle became popular as a circus dog in the 19th Century due to their aptitude for learning tricks.
Poodles have a distinctive yet elegant coat that is often referred to as a "pouf." This coat is low-shedding and does not require complex grooming, however, the long curly hair coat does require a certain level of maintenance in order to remain in the best condition. The curly, semi-hypoallergenic coat comes in different clip styles, from the traditional puppy clip to the English Saddle clip to the excellent Continental and Townhouse clip.
Poodles need a fresh, healthy diet that is high in animal proteins, such as beef, poultry, fish, and eggs, and low in grains like wheat and corn. Fruits and vegetables should also be included, as well as small amounts of carbohydrates to provide energy for activity. It is generally recommended that poodles eat two to three meals a day with a combination of wet and dry food. Wet food should provide the lion's share of nutrition and is usually supplemented with a dry food containing important vitamins and minerals.
Preparing your home for a new Poodle can seem daunting, but taking the right steps can make the process easier. Start by researching the breed and making adjustments to the living space that are specific to the Poodle's needs. Purchase comfortable bedding and make sure to have a secure and appropriate area to contain the dog while indoors. Poodles need plenty of exercise, so it is also important to evaluate your home layout and determine if you have adequate space for walking, running and playing.
Poodles come in four distinct size varieties: Standard, Miniature, Toy and the recently recognized Teacup. Standard Poodles are generally between 15-23 inches in height and weigh between 45-85 pounds. Miniature Poodles typically range in size from 10-15 inches and weigh 10-15 pounds. Toy Poodles are usually between 10-11 inches and typically weigh between 4-9 pounds. Finally, the newly recognized Teacup variety are typically under 10 inches and weigh 2-4 pounds.
The exact amount of time for daily walking for your Poodle may depend on their age and energy level. Generally speaking, it is recommended to take your Poodle for walks at least twice a day for 20 to 30 minutes each. This will depend on your pup and the environment in which you are walking. During the summer months, it is advised to avoid walking during the hottest hours of the day, as pavement and sidewalks can become very hot and could be damaging to dogs' feet.
Absolutely! Poodles are a great choice for families of all sizes. Intelligent, friendly, and easily trained, these dogs make wonderful companions for children as well as adults. Their natural liveliness and intelligence also means they are great for keeping everyone entertained. Despite their appearance, poodles are not just lap dogs they need daily exercise and a moderate amount of grooming. However, with the right training and a good amount of love, they can be loyal and devoted members of the family.
Training a Poodle can certainly be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, but it does require some diligence and patience to teach your pet the basic commands and commands for tricks. Since Poodles, particularly Toy and Miniature Poodles, are intelligent and eager to please, they can be relatively easy to teach. However, Poodles can also be quite stubborn and independent, so you may need to exercise extra patience. Consistency in rewards and commands is also key when training a Poodle.
