Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a distinctly recognizable breed of dog, known for its curly coat of fur, intelligence, and loyalty. This breed is sought after by many due to its versatility; Poodles are excellent in the show ring as well as in performance sports such as agility, tracking, and obedience competitions. Poodles come in three sizes: standard, miniature, and toy.
Poodles are renowned for being a hypoallergenic breed of dog with very little shedding. Thanks to their fascinating curly coat, there's no need to worry about the same kind of fur-induced allergies that come with other breeds. While fur itself isn't the culprit, it's what it captures in the environment pet dander, dust, and pollen that is to blame. Poodles do have fur, but because of its shape and consistency, it doesn't trap or capture airborne particles or irritants, thus making them an ideal choice for people with allergies.
Poodles require a healthy, nutrient-rich diet to support their active lifestyle. My recommendation is to provide your Poodle with high-quality, age-specific, meat-based wet food formulated specifically for their breed. For example, a premium wet food with limited ingredients that is lower in fat and specifically tailored to the Poodle's metabolism is a good direction to take. Dry food containing real animal-sourced protein and limited fillers should also be included.
Before bringing your new Poodle home, it's important to make sure you're properly prepared. Set up your home with all the necessary supplies, such as a comfy bed, chew toys, grooming supplies, leash, food and water bowls, and food that is specifically suited to your dog's age, weight, and breed. Make sure your home is safe and secure with child locks, gates, and sturdy fences if necessary.
Poodles come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature and Toy. Standard Poodles generally stand between 15 and 24 inches tall and usually weigh between 40 and 70 pounds. Miniature Poodles reach heights of 10 to 15 inches and usually weigh in at 12-20 pounds. Toy Poodles usually stand at 10 inches or less, weighing between four and six pounds. It's important to remember that, regardless of size, all Poodles have the same happy, playful personalities that make them great companions.
Poodles are active and highly intelligent dogs that need a sufficient amount of daily exercise to stay healthy and fit. Depending on the size of your Poodle, they should be given at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. This could be a game of fetch, a long walk, or active play time with you and other friendly dogs. Just like with humans, the intensity of the exercise should be determined by age, size, and health. Additionally, it is important to remember that mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise.
Poodles make excellent family dogs as they are loyal, intelligent, gentle, and easy to train. Their curly coat serves as a natural cushion, so they tend to be very gentle with children. Poodles also make ideal watchdogs, alerting their owners of visitors at the door, but they will not bark excessively. Poodles come in three sizes, so depending on your living arrangements, there is likely an appropriate size poodle that will fit with your family. Training a poodle is relatively easy as they learn quickly and they like to please their owners.
Training a Poodle is actually a fairly straightforward process, provided you have the right information and take the time to observe your pet. The key is to remain consistent and patient, as Poodles have a tendency to outsmart their owners if unsupervised. Keeping the training sessions short is important Poodles need frequent breaks in order to retain the commands you are trying to teach them. Additionally, positive reinforcement is the best approach, as rewards go a long way towards encouraging proper behavior. If you're feeling intimidated by the task, there are also experienced trainers who can help you when needed.
