Questions & Answers
Poodles are one of the oldest breeds of domesticated dogs, having been around since the 15th century as far back as Germany. What's more, they come in three sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. Fun fact: Poodles are surprisingly athletic and strong, and are the second smartest of all the dog breeds. They even excel in a variety of sports from agility to dock diving, which is a sport in which dogs leap into water from a platform.
Poodles are great dogs for those who do not want to contend with excessive or frequent shedding. All poodles possess a coat that is made up of soft, curly hairs. Since these hairs are tightly curled, Poodles have virtually no undercoat and will therefore shed very little. Moreover, the shedding of the curly hairs is minimized further by the fact that poodles have shorter lifespans than other breeds and tend to retain their coat for as long as they are alive.
Poodles are active dogs, so they need a high-quality, nutritionally balanced diet that is suitable for their age, size, and activity level. Generally speaking, poodles enjoy diets of commercial kibble, canned food, and/or cooked meals supplemented with small amounts of healthy snacks. Kibble is widely available, but should be specifically formulated for the size and breed of your poodle. Canned food is high in moisture content and can help to keep your dog hydrated.
Preparing for a new Poodle requires planning and research. Before bringing your new pet home, create a space for its bed, toys, and food. Research dog-friendly foods, treats, and chew toys that are safe for your Poodle. Familiarize yourself with their grooming needs and the supplies necessary to keep them looking their best. Additionally, consider if additional products may be helpful such as nail trimmers and leash sets. Make sure to plan to feed your Poodle at least twice a day and make arrangements for taking them out for potty breaks when needed.
Poodles come in four main sizes the Toy Poodle, the Miniature Poodle, the Standard Poodle, and the Moyen or Klein Poodle. The Toy Poodle stands no more than 10 inches tall and typically weighs less than 10 pounds. The Miniature Poodle stands 11 to 15 inches tall and typically weighs between 15 and 17 pounds. The Standard Poodle stands 15 inches and taller, and typically range in weight 25 to 70 pounds.
Absolutely! Poodles are one of the most active breeds of dogs. Not only do they require daily physical exercise to keep their body healthy, but their intelligence and curious nature require they be provided with regular mental stimulation. An active Poodle can thrive with a long walk, a gallop in the park, brisk games of fetch, an interactive toy, or puzzle. The options are limitless and will provide your Poodle with the mental and physical energy release it needs to be healthy, both physically and emotionally.
Poodles can make wonderful family pets, depending on the home environment. They’re known for their intelligence and loyalty and can be great companions for children and adults alike. They’re very energetic and love to play, and with proper socialization and training, they can be well-mannered and obedient. They also have minimal shedding and come in various sizes, so they can adapt to any size home or yard. With the right balance of love and attention, they can thrive in a family setting and make enjoyable additions to any home.
Training your Poodle is a wonderful way to build a lifelong bond and provide your pup with basic skills, commands, and good manners. Start by familiarizing yourself with positive reinforcement training. Reward-based training encourages desirable behaviors and builds a trusting relationship between you and your pup. Use treats or verbal praises, such as “good boy/girl” for desired behaviors. Always avoid punishment-based training. Have a plan for each training session and make sure it is fun and rewarding for your pup. Practice commands such as "sit," "stay," and "come" on a daily basis.
