Questions & Answers
Poodles are one of the oldest and most iconic breeds, with a rich history stretching back over 400 years. They are originally from Germany and were bred to hunt waterfowl, although their use in the show ring has seen their shape and size shift slightly and become standard. Poodles are also known for their hypoallergenic coats, which don't shed and help keep allergens out of the home environment.
Poodles are a great choice if you're considering a non-shedding breed of dog. When properly groomed, their curly coats can help reduce shedding and clumps of hair, as well as minimizing the level of dander which can help those with allergies. In addition, the poodle's coat is more tolerant to brushing, combing, and other forms of grooming than many other breeds, making maintenance more simple. That being said, the coat does need regular maintenance and the occasional trim in order to stay healthy.
Poodles are highly adaptable, and can thrive on a wide variety of diets. Generally speaking, good quality dry food is recommended, with occasional wet food, cooked meat, and vegetables added. But it is important that any additions to their diet are balanced, to ensure they get the right balance of vitamins and minerals. A high-protein feed is important for active Poodles, and can be supplemented with small amounts of fish, eggs, or cheese. Poodles should not have foods like chocolate which can have a negative effect on them.
Preparing for a new Poodle requires some time and effort. Before bringing your new pet home, research their breed to better understand potential behavior, care, and training needs. Set up a safe, comfortable area in your home for your Poodle, such as a designated bed or area rug. Stock up on necessary items like food and water bowls, grooming supplies, and toys. Remember, Poodles need a lot of mental and physical stimulation, so consider providing stimulating toys and interactive activities.
It is difficult to predict the exact size of your Poodle puppy due to the fact that their size is dependent upon several physiological, environmental and dietary factors. Generally, standard Poodles are considered to be medium-large dogs, and typically reach between 20-24" when measured from the top of the shoulder. On average, they can typically weigh anywhere between 4575 pounds. Toy Poodles are substantially smaller with their height typically ranging from 10-12" tall and weight ranging from 6-17 pounds.
Although there is no definitive answer for how many minutes per day your Poodle should spend walking, it's recommended that they enjoy a moderate walk every day; ideally between 20-30 minutes, depending on their age, size and health. Of course, if your Poodle is particularly high energy, they may need more. However, it's important to tailor your walks to your canine companion. If they seem tired after 10-15 minutes, then take the time to play a game and reduce the distance covered.
Poodles absolutely make wonderful family dogs, as they are incredibly loyal, affectionate, and smart. With the right training and socialization, they can become the perfect companion for any family. Poodles have the unique ability to adjust to different situations and environments and are among the most intelligent and adaptive breeds of dog. They are great playmates for children and also receive lots of attention from all around. Poodles tend to be very low-maintenance and non-destructive indoors, and their coats require less grooming than other breeds as well.
Training a Poodle can be a surprisingly easy process depending on your experience and the individual personality of the Poodle. An important factor in any successful training is consistency and patience, both of which you must have when working with a Poodle. As long as you are firm in your expectations when teaching your Poodle and are kind and encouraging, the pup can learn basic skills relatively quickly. Additionally, Poodles have an impressive capacity for learning, so it can be beneficial to make training fun or to vary reward systems to keep the process interesting and enjoyable for the pup.
