Bernedoodles are an increasingly popular breed of dog thanks to their fun personalities and their striking looks. They are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They were first bred in 2003 in the United States and can be as small as 12 pounds or as large as 100 pounds, depending upon the size of the parents. They are usually a mix of both breeds – some Bernedoodles being more Bernese Mountain Dog-like, and others more Poodle-like. Bernedoodles are usually quick to learn, intelligent, and can be a very loyal companion.
The Bernedoodle coat is quite unique compared to other poodle mixes. It's usually a combination of a Poodle's soft, curly coat and the Bernese Mountain Dog's straight and medium-length coat. Because of this hybrid genetics, the resulting Bernedoodle coat can be straight or wavy, long or short. The coat usually requires regular clipping and can come in many different colors. Common colors for a Bernedoodle coat are black, white, gray, silver, and cream, although other colors may occur too.
Bernedoodles have some unique dietary needs due to their Breed Standard cross of an Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. These hybrid dogs require a specific nutritional diet due to their high activity and large size. Nutritionists recommend a balanced diet comprising of a high-quality dry kibble that contains high levels of protein and essential fatty acids such as omega-3. Bernedoodles also require other dietary needs such as probiotics, vitamins and minerals to ensure their health and well-being.
Preparing your home for your new Bernedoodle is an important step in the transition process. First, it is necessary to puppy-proof your home in order to create a safe living environment for your Bernedoodle. Evaluate your home and remove any items that are potentially hazardous for your puppy. Second, you should establish a space for your Bernedoodle in the home with a comfortable bed and a safe area where your puppy can relax and practice its training. You should expect your puppy to chew, so it is important to make items like toys or chew blocks available.
The size of your Bernedoodle puppy will depend on the parents' size and the generations of breeding. The Standard Bernedoodle can reach more than 75 pounds and be over 21 inches tall at the shoulder. If the puppy is a Miniature Bernedoodle bred from a Miniature Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog, it could get to be around 30 pounds and 15 inches tall at the shoulder. A Teacup Bernedoodle, a cross between a Teacup Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog, may be even smaller, coming in at under 10 pounds.
