Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a designer breed combining the intelligence and good nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the hypoallergenic properties of a Standard Poodle. These pooches are the perfect companion for those with allergies and enjoy an active, outdoors lifestyle. They come in a variety of sizes, from miniature to standard, and come in a variety of color variations from deep black with white markings, to pure white. Bernedoodles have a double-coat and non-shedding capabilities, making them great for those who have allergies.
Bernedoodles are often considered to be a non-shedding breed, but that does not necessarily mean Bernedoodles won't shed at all. While Bernedoodles tend to have significantly less shedding than other breeds, they *do* still shed on occasion. How much each Bernedoodle will shed depends on a few variables, such as the coat type of the dog, proper grooming, and genetics. For example, a Bernedoodle with a curly coat type shed less than one with a straighter coat.
Bernedoodles do not have special dietary needs compared to other similar breeds. They should be fed a high-protein dog food, ideally one that includes fish oils, which can give their coats a glossy appearance. Additionally, supplementing this with healthy treats such as carrots, celery and green beans can provide them with a variety of vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients for healthy growth and development.
Becoming the best puppy parent while awaiting your Bernedoodle can be an exciting, but complicated process. You can get a head start by researching the breed and preparing yourself (and your home) for your pup's arrival. One great starting point is to read up on what to do in the first weeks after you receive your pup. This includes understanding the best food and nutrition necessary for their growth, proper puppy potty-training practices, and the necessary grooming and healthcare they will need as they grow.
Bernedoodles come in three basic sizes: Standard, Mini, and Tiny. The Standard Bernedoodle ranges between 55 to 100 pounds and stands anywhere between 22 to 29 inches tall, while the Mini ranges between 25 to 50 pounds and 17 and 22 inches tall. The Tiny Bernedoodle is the smallest and ranges between 15 to 24 pounds and 12 and 17 inches tall. Each of these sizes is created by the cross-breeding of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. Every Bernedoodle is unique, so size predictions are only estimates and should not be taken as exact measurements.
Bernedoodles require minimal exercise, but benefit from some activity to stay healthy and fit. A good rule of thumb to follow is one hour of exercise a day. This can be achieved through a combination of activities such as walking, running, playing fetch, or going to the doggy park. Playing these kinds of activities are important to help the Bernedoodle bond with its owner, as well as maintain physical and mental health.
Absolutely! Bernedoodles are affable, intelligent, and loyal dogs, making them an excellent choice to be part of the family. Not only are they great with kids, they can also be very protective of them. Bernedoodles are extremely patient and loving, and they often show signs of affection such as cuddling and occasionally laying their head in your lap. From providing companionship, to playing fetch in the backyard, these dogs make the perfect companion for any family.
Training a Bernedoodle is an essential part of establishing a rewarding and lasting bond between you and your pup. The key is to provide positive reinforcement paired with patient and consistent instruction. Start with the basics such as housebreaking, teaching them their name, basic commands (like sit, stay, come, etc), and how to walk on a leash. Make sure to use treats and verbal praise to encourage and reward good behavior. As your pup learns, challenge them with items like obstacle courses, agility training, and games like hide and seek.
