Questions & Answers
A Golden Retriever is an intelligent and loyal companion breed of dog that originated from Scotland. Golden Retrievers are highly affectionate and patient, which makes them excellent family dogs. They have a luxurious golden coat that can be sleek and luscious or thick and wavy. Their strong, athletic build allows them to excel in agility, obedience, hunting, and water sports. They have a natural instinct to please their owners, and respond well to obedience training. Golden Retrievers make wonderful service and therapy dogs, able to offer comfort and assist in a variety of ways.
Generally, Golden Retrievers are not hypoallergenic. Some people have allergies to all dogs and they may be more sensitive to Golden Retrievers who, as a breed, shed a great deal. While Goldens do produce low levels of dander, this still may cause a reaction in people who are sensitive to dog dander as well as pet hair. Even frequent brushing and vacuuming may not be enough to reduce the effects that pet allergens may have on those with sensitivities.
A Golden Retriever's diet should include high-quality, age-appropriate food that is rich in protein and contains the right balance of fat and carbohydrate. Protein should come from animal sources, such as poultry, beef, fish, and eggs, to meet their higher protein needs. Supplements, such as vitamins, minerals, and joint support, should also be added to their diet. Also, it's important to make sure they are getting enough water to stay hydrated.
Before bringing a Golden Retriever home, it is important to prepare your home for their arrival. Firstly, make sure that any dangerous objects are safely out of reach and secure electrical cords. Additionally, replace any old furniture that could present a risk to your new dog. Also, designate an area in your home that they can use to take rest and sleep, such as a doggy bed or crate. You may also want to ensure there are areas or items in the house that are specifically for your new pup to enjoy, such as chew toys and treats.
Golden Retrievers typically reach heights between 21-24 inches and average a weight of 55-75 pounds, depending on whether they are male or female. Male Golden Retrievers typically being on the larger side. Likewise, if the dog's parents are on the larger end of the size range, the puppy will likely be bigger. In general, a full-grown Golden Retriever can take up a lot of space, not to mention a hearty appetite! Generally, these dogs live for 10-12 years and reach maturity at around two years of age.
The amount of exercise your Golden Retriever should get each day depends on their individual energy level and age. Generally, it’s recommended to walk them for 30-60 minutes a day, with 10-20 minutes of active play. However, senior dogs may need less exercise and puppies may need more. Ideally, let your Golden Retriever go for three to four walks a day that add up to 30 to 60 minutes at a comfortable pace. This will keep them physically and mentally healthy.
Golden Retrievers are often considered one of the best breeds of dogs for families. They are friendly, loyal, intelligent, and excel at most every task they are given. Additionally, Golden Retrievers are known to be patient and eager to please. They learn quickly, respond well to training, and make strong emotional connections to their families. They also have an upbeat and cheerful disposition, which makes them perfect companions for children and adults alike. With the right training and socialization, they are quite easy to manage and get along well with other canines, cats and animals.
While nothing is guaranteed when it comes to training a pet, Golden Retrievers are famously among the most intelligent and trainable breeds. If you have the time and patience to train your Golden Retriever from an early age and reward it for desired behaviors, you can likely enjoy a rewarding experience of living with a well-mannered, obedient pup! Starting with basic commands such as sit, stay, come and down can help develop good habits in any Golden Retriever, setting them up for success across training, grooming, walking, and more.
