Its color is usually golden, although it can range from light gold to a darker mahogany color. Its coat naturally sheds, and regular brushing helps maintain its natural sheen. Its double coat and long, flowing topcoat protect it from the environment and provide superior insulation against the cold. The nose is often black and the eyes, ears, and lip are a darker brown.
Golden Retrievers generally have the same dietary needs as other breeds, but thanks to their active lifestyle, they may need more nutrients and energy. They require a balanced diet of high-quality proteins and fats to help build muscle mass and repair their furry coat, and carbohydrates to give them the energy they need to be at their best. Additionally, Golden Retrievers need a diet with sufficient vitamins, minerals, and omega fatty acids to keep them healthy, as well as an occasional dietary supplement if necessary.
Preparing your home for your Golden Retriever is an important step in ensuring the health and safety of both you and your pet. Start with creating a safe, comfortable space. Make sure you provide plenty of bedding and chew toys to occupy your pet, and set aside designated areas for eating, sleeping, and taking them out for potty breaks. Additionally, childproof any areas your pet might be able to access, so that they are not able to get into any potentially harmful items.

Their full size will be reached in approximately 18 months after they are born, but they will continue to gradually build muscle until they reach full maturity at two years of age. Golden Retrievers are highly active and highly intelligent breeds. As such, they need quite a bit of exercise to stay healthy and happy. A good benchmark for daily exercise that most Golden Retriever owners follow is around 60 minutes. This can be divided up into several shorter exercise sessions if needed. It is important, however, that Golden Retrievers are able to frequent runs, walks and playtime on a daily basis. Regularly engaging in more intensive exercise (such as fetch games and swimming) is also beneficial and should occur several times a week.

Training a Golden Retriever can be a rewarding but challenging experience. As a bright and loyal breed, it is possible to teach a Golden Retriever the behaviors that you would like it to exhibit. However, since this breed is particularly intelligent and full of energy, it does require a consistent and dedicated approach. Golden Retrievers are highly motivated by positive reinforcement, so it is important to give plenty of praise and reward it often when it takes part in activities or behaviors that you have encouraged.
