Labrador Retrievers are a popular breed known for their intelligence, loyalty, and friendliness. They are also known to be an excellent choice as a family pet as they are eager to please and enjoy human company. Fun facts about Labradors include that they originated in Newfoundland, Canada and were bred for helping fisherman haul in their nets. They have a very strong swimming ability and otter-like tail to help them in the water. They are also the most popular purebred dog in the United States and serve in many roles such as guide dogs, hunting dogs, and search and rescue dogs.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered to be a non-shedding breed. These dogs shed their heavy, water-resistant double-layer coats throughout the year. They will go through two heavy shedding periods each year; typically one shedding period in the fall and one in the spring when they are changing their coats. During these seasons, Labrador Retrievers will require more brushing and grooming to help prevent matting, as well as removing dead fur and reducing the amount of loose fur in the home.
Labrador Retrievers are renowned for having a voracious appetite, so it's important to feed them a nutritionally balanced diet. Generally speaking, they do best with food specifically designed for large breed dogs. It should contain real meat as the first ingredient, and there should be plenty of quality carbohydrates and fats to provide them with the energy they need. Additionally, a good food should contain essential vitamins and minerals, along with quality sources of protein, essential fats, and dietary fiber.
In order to properly prepare for your new Labrador Retriever, you will need to set up its environment with the appropriate tools. First and foremost, you should make sure it has access to a comfortable and secure place to sleep; this could mean purchasing a doggy bed and/or crate. Providing busy toys and chew treats can also help keep it occupied. With regards to feeding, you will need bowls for food and water, and high-quality dog food tailored to its age, weight and health.
Labrador Retrievers typically grow up to be fairly large dogs. Generally, by the time they reach their first birthday, they are close to their full adult size, which can range anywhere from 22-24 inches tall and 55-80 pounds. Of course, each puppy will grow and mature at its own individual pace, so it's hard to give an exact estimate of how big yours will be. It's important to remember that Labradors are talented family dogs and their size can vary significantly.

A typical adult Labrador Retriever should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, ideally split between moderate walks (for as long as 30 minutes) and active playtime (lasting 10-15 minutes).
