Questions & Answers
Poodles are a highly intelligent and adaptable breed of dog. They come in three distinct sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy, each of which have their own unique characteristics. Fun facts about Poodles include that they are one of the oldest dog breeds, dating back to over 400 years ago in France. Poodles have earned a reputation as great family pets, as they are friendly and good-natured, as well as highly trainable and obedient. Their thick, curly coat also makes them excellent swimmers, while their webbed feet help them navigate through the water.
Poodles are technically non-shedding, however, their coat does require regular clipping and brushing to prevent hair from being left around the home. The length of the fur and the temperament of the Poodle can determine how often it may need to be groomed. Generally, it is recommended to take a Poodle to a professional groomer every three to four months to trim the coat and prevent matting. Most professional groomers also offer coat brushing services to help with the shedding process.
Poodles tend to be very eager eaters and they are omnivores, meaning they equally enjoy a variety of both meat and veggie-based foods. Any diet should embody high-quality, easily digestible nutrients with little to no fillers. Additionally, as poodles have remarkably sensitive digestive systems, be sure to introduce new foods very slowly and carefully, ensuring that the food is in line with the individual’s age, health, and lifestyle.
As you eagerly await the arrival of your new Poodle, there are a number of things you can do to make sure you are the best puppy parent you can be! Start by stocking up on all the essential puppy supplies such as a dog bed, food and water dishes, toys, treats, and a collar. You will also want to research the best puppy food and resources that will help you better understand the breed and its unique characteristics. Ensure you have enough time to properly care for and train your new pup, such as providing adequate exercise, mental stimulation, and socialization opportunities.
As a general rule, the size of your Poodle puppy will depend upon their breed. Standard Poodles usually weigh between 40 and 70 pounds and measure between 20 and 24 inches tall at the shoulder. Toy Poodles are much smaller, typically growing to 10 inches, weighing between 4 and 6 pounds. Miniature Poodles are between the two sizes, typically growing to 15 inches, weighing between 15 and 17 pounds. Each litter may also have puppies that are slightly larger or smaller than their littermates, causing individual variations in size.
The amount of time you should walk your Poodle each day depends on both their age and their level of physical activity. Generally speaking, a young, active Poodle should be walked for at least 30 minutes a day; whereas, an older, less active Poodle may only require 15 minutes. Of course, these are just average suggestions and, if your Poodle is showing signs of boredom or frustration, they may need longer and/or more frequent walks.
Poodles are fantastic family dogs! They are intelligent, loyal, and can be quite loving. Poodles come in three sizes, which means one could fit any size family. They are also strong, energetic, and playful, making them a great companion for children. They are also hypoallergenic and do not shed, which makes them a great choice for families with allergies. Not only that, but they can be easily trained and taught good manners and obedience. All of these traits make poodles excellent family dogs that can fit into any family.
To train your Poodle, begin by socializing them to people and other animals. Start with short, positive encounters and gradually expand the time of the encounters and the number of new people and other animals encountered. Praise your pup with treats and verbal praise each time they have a successful encounter. Also practice basic obedience commands such as come when called, sit, stay, heel, and down. Have your pup practice these commands in different places or environments daily. Make sure to keep the training sessions short and interesting by changing the commands and reward system. Also, be consistent.
