Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are a beloved breed of dog known for their intelligence, loyalty and good-natured personalities. They were originally bred as gundogs in the 1800s to help in the hunting of waterfowl in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. They are the most popular breed of dog in the United States and in many other countries.
Labrador Retrievers are not naturally non-shedding breeds, which means they will shed moderately year-round. However they are known for having low levels of shedding compared to other breeds. To keep a Labradors shedding to a minimum, regular grooming and professional trimming is recommended. Brushing your dog regularly will also help keep the shedding under control by removing dead hair from its coat and reducing the amount of hair that gets onto furniture and clothing. Weekly vacuuming can help keep shedding to a minimum in the home.
Labrador Retrievers are active dogs that require a high-quality diet for optimal growth and health. Interestingly, the food that satisfies their nutritional requirements can vary depending on their age. Puppies, for example, typically need a diet higher in certain essential nutrients that provide the building blocks for healthy bones, organs, and muscle growth. Adult Labs should be given a food that is higher in protein to promote a healthy coat and muscle mass while maintaining their ideal weight. Senior Labs may require an easily digestible food with additional joint support to help them remain active.
When preparing to bring home a Labrador Retriever, the most important thing to consider is their activity level and the need for daily exercise. Be sure to have a fenced-in yard, or plan to establish a long-term path for daily walks. Additionally, it's important to seek out a reputable veterinarian in the area for medical care, as well as locate pet supply stores for food and toys. If you plan to toilet train your pup, research appropriate methods and products. Finally, be sure to schedule time for socialization, training, and fun activities like playing fetch or tug!
Labrador Retrievers are considered to be a medium-size breed, but within that range, their size can vary significantly. Some Labs are considered to be 'standard' in size, and these dogs typically stand 21.5-24.5 inches at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere between 55-80 pounds. 'Small' or 'miniature' Labradors are also sometimes bred, and these pups can stand as little as 17-20 inches tall and weigh between 35-50 pounds.
It is recommended that Labrador Retrievers get at least 30 minutes of moderate activity each day. This should include a combination of walking, jogging and/or playing fetch to stay healthy and fit. Longer walks of 45 minutes to an hour can also help improve stamina and increase happiness. Keep the walks at a leisurely pace so that your Retriever stays enjoyed and energetic for the duration of the walk. If you’re unable to provide a full 30 minutes of walking, try breaking it up into shorter bouts throughout the day.
Labrador Retrievers are renowned for their outstanding temperament and easily classed among the most friendly and easy-going dog breeds. They are popular family pets due to their outstanding sociable nature and make excellent companions for children of all ages. Labradors are intelligent and eager to please which make them fun and easy to train. They love interacting with people and have lots of energy, playing and having fun which makes them a perfect breed for active children and adults.
Yes, Labrador Retrievers are often considered one of the smartest breeds of dog. They are excellent problem-solvers, efficient in learning and retaining information, and exhibit a high level of adaptability. These dogs can quickly comprehend information, form strategies, and even understand what people want from them. Labradors are also keenly attentive to their environment, making them ever-aware of new changes, like the arrival of visitors.
